Head in any direction to Riberac and follow the signs for Verteillac (approximately 10 minutes). Then follow the sign for Nateuill-Auraic-De-Bourzac and finally Nanteuil. On driving up the hill, you will find the final sign for Coutancie and the house.

Situated within easy reach of Verteillac and La Tour Blanche both providing ample visiting opportunities.

The town of Nontron is 20 km north, set amongst attractive lakes that are ideal picnic sites. Nontron stands high upon a rock fortified by massive ramparts and has a fine 18th C. Château (housing a museum of dolls, models, games and toys), making it ideal for the whole family.

The medieval town of Brantôme is fascinating and picturesque, with a remarkable ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). Brantôme sits on a bend in the River Dronne making a stroll along the riverside an unforgettable experience. Brantôme is also home to several good restaurants and boats trips are available.

The delightful village of Bourdeilles has two Châteaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th C.) and a renaissance palace (16th C.). On the River Dronne you can rent a canoe to visit the imposing overhang of the natural fortification.

The town of Riberac is a short drive away and is particularly well known for its Friday market – the best in the area and well worth a visit.

The Grottes (Caves) de Villars contains impressive stalactites and paintings that are more than 17,000 years old. The Grottes de Villars was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries. Nearby is the Château de Puyguilhem. This is a fascinating Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair after the revolution but has since been carefully restored. The Château contains several fine Aubusson tapestries and several carved fireplaces.

Venturing further east Verteillac and over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne. This town comprises charming narrow streets that wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France's prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterrre is the underground church of St John, carved entirely out of rock, the main nave reaches a height of 20 m.

There are also fishing and beaches at La Jemaye (14 km), a large lake with sandy beaches, pedaloes, canoes, horse riding, picnic areas and a café.

Nanteuil Auriac de Bourzac

Coutancie is part of a small hamlet located close to Nanteuil-Auriac-De-Bourzac which ensures the property is surrounded by beautiful rolling, partly wooded, countryside.

Within a short five minute drive is Verteillac providing shopping facilities, bars and many restaurants. For further amenities, Riberac is an additional 15 minutes drive. Alternatively, twenty minutes away is the Historical town of Auberterre. Riberac has a good range of shops and two large hypermarkets, restaurants, banks and a Friday market.

Perigueux, the department capital lies about 50 kilometres to the south-east and Bordeaux is about an hour and a half away by car, as is the Atlantic coast. Nearby, Brantome has two 2* Michelin Guide restaurants.

“So gorgeous we want to keep it for ourselves...”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2015

We were a bit reluctant to write a review of this property, as it is so lovely we want to keep it for ourselves. The owner was so helpful and accommodating, and the house is everything the advert promises - and more. Everything in the house is for the use of the guests, and we mean everything. Bikes, pool table, croquet set, cards, films, loads and loads of books, barbecues and beach towels. There is a wonderful large swimming pool (alarmed to prevent a little one falling in unnoticed), surrounded by some 18 loungers. In addition there are tables and chairs all around the property, including some tucked away in quiet corners of the grounds - which are beautifully planted and maintained. There is a lovely verandah, some 50 meters long, with dining table, chairs and a sofa, from where one can lounge and and watch the sun go down over the french countryside. The location may not suit everyone, but we thought it stunning. There are the lovely views, and the house is a little remote, so very tranquil and private. The nearest Supermarket is about a 20 - 25 minute drive away on very quiet roads, and the nearest restaurants maybe 15 - 20 minutes. If your idea of a good holiday is night clubs, bars, and foam parties then it will be much too quiet for you. But if you seek tranquility, comfort, and "frenchness" in beautiful surroundings, then we doubt you could find a better place.

“Beautiful house, wonderful views and most relaxing holiday.”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2014

We stayed at La Coutancie at the end of June 2014 with my elderly mother. The house is very spacious which made it easy to use a wheelchair and walking frame both inside and outside the house. We had arranged prior to our visit for there to be an electric bath seat and other mobility aides for our use which made the holiday a very comfortable experience. Upon arrival the house and grounds exceeded our expectations. The quality of the furnishings were exceptional, much better than anywhere else I have rented previously. The house is beautifully decorated, very well maintained and wonderfully clean. It makes you feel very relaxed, like home from home, from the moment you arrive. The house is ideal whether you are a small party or a larger group. There is something for everyone here whether you want to play pool, darts, table tennis etc. or just relax by the pool taking in the stunning views. The attention to detail in the bedrooms is great with the provision of the charges for all your electronic devices and the clock radio with ipod / iphone charger. The beds are very comfortable which lead to a wonderful night’s sleep. The addition of UK TV via Freesat meant everyone was still able to catch up on their favourite TV programmes and the wifi was also very handy. The great location of the house meant we were able to go out and see many sights without having to travel too far or too long in the car. The weather was fantastic and we were grateful to have the pool to cool off in. We sat out most evenings looking at the stunning views and watching the sun set which wasn’t until 10:30pm. That’s one of the great things about going in June for the long sunlit days. I also have to mention how wonderfully peaceful it is at the house and you can lay by the pool listening to the birds singing in the trees. We will definitely be returning to the house whether it is with family or a group of friends. It has been one of the most relaxing holidays I have had in a long while and I cannot recommend it enough. Although they provided us with clear directions to the house I would recommend taking a SatNav with you due to the wonderful country location which takes away any worries of finding your way around. They do also provide laminated detailed directions to all the local towns and information of the local attractions and amenities. I would just like to say a thank you to Robert and his family for good communication in answering any questions we had and for the support they gave in accommodating our requests for our mobility needs.

“Charming house and peaceful location.”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2014

I stayed at La Courtency for a four day weekend with two friends. I was impressed by the peaceful location and also the thought that the owners have put into this very spacious holiday rental. There is plenty of room for larger groups, so that no one feels crowded. The house has sunrise at the front, which is great for breakfast in the sun. In the afternoon, the sunset views across the valley are very impressive. And it’s a very private location. The early spring weather was also great. When you add the charming location with many historic towns and villages within a short drive, I would have no hesitation in recommending La Courtency for a relaxing family or friends holiday, and look forward to returning to further explore the region.

“Southern France A Must”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2012

A great place to stay and use as a base for many visits to local interesting places. We were a large group and not one of us felt crowded - we all seemed to have our own space, with age ranges from 18 months to age 61, that was a big ask! I particularly liked peacefulness of the house and grounds when all the crowd went out - just the wildlife and me to enjoy it. The swimming pool was a big hit with the mob, young and old alike, as well as all the games facilities, the Freesat box and the WiFi - very well appointed. The catering facilities were also good and we coped with our large crowd more than adequately. The number of bathrooms etc. was a big hit also. We would definitely recommend this house as a place for large and small gatherings. we would hope to go again soon

“Magical property, totally amazing views. Loved everything about it!”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2012

We rented this property as a group of three families (16 of us in all!) & from the moment we arrived we could not have felt more at home! The house itself is simply stunning and has been renovated/re-decorated beautifully. It was spacious and very clean. All of the guest rooms were a delight and the added touches of iPod doc's & universal phone chargers in each room were brilliant. We stayed for 3 weeks and the first couple of days the weather was a bit miserable but none of us had ever been to a house that provided so much in house entertainment!!! There were 9 children in our party and there were so many cupboards stuffed full with boardgames/toys/jigsaws etc that our little ones were always happy!!! The outside dining areas were well thought out and as there were several we got into a routine of breakfast at one, lunch at another and then, depending on the heat, dinner at a third!! Obviously, the pool was a hit with all of our children & the views are breathtaking. One of the most amazing things about this property is it's location. With all of us coping with busy lives and living on main roads!!! The quietness was total bliss! Maybe upto 5 cars driving passed (on a busy day!) We just loved being away from everything and therefore totally relaxing. This is the perfect property to just kick back and relax! We ate (too much!), drank (far too much!!) and possibly relaxed more than ever before on a rental holiday. We would definately recommend La coutancie and will be hoping to return again in the next few years! Also, a thanks to Robert for all his assistance and efficiency with booking/paying and for proving us with so much local information, it was very much appreciated. Thanks again, Moss, Hine and Stott families

“A Stunning, beautiful, luxurious & absolutely breath taking place!”

My wife and I recently got married and rented this beautiful house for ourselves and our family to stay in for a special honeymoon/family gathering. When we arrived at the house we were absolutly bowled over by the beauty of the property, its surrounding views and its grounds. In total there were 17 of us, ages ranging from 3 yrs - 68 yrs. There was ample room and facilities to comfortably house & entertain all of us in luxury. The owner Robert was a thorough gentlemen throughout and tended to our every need, making sure everything was just perfect for us.The quality of the furnishings, bedding, memory foam mattresses and general decor was outstanding. We are all already arranging our return!! This is a truly magical place, dont miss out!! (The new Mr & Mrs Eyers & family!)

Thank you so much for your comments. We are so pleased that your whole family enjoyed your holiday and that you would love to go back to the house. We are delighted that you choose our house to hold your honeymoon.Good Luck for the future and keep in contact.

“Absolutely amazing!”

This was an amazing break in a fabulous house in the most beautiful countryside. The standard of accomodation that this property in the beautiful Dordogne area is absolutely first class and I would highly reccomend it to anyone. The bedrooms are five star as is the living area. The views are amazing from the rear of the house and there are lots of little extras provided such as table tennis, pool table, bar football, trampoline etc. The nearby towns and villages are stunning and the property was easy enough to get to from nearby Vertaillac. We will definitely be going back!

“Great place for a family holiday!”

Reviewed 12 Jun 2012

We have just returned from a week long stay at the house and had a wonderful time. There were 18 of us spanning all ages including three children under 2. The house is comfortable, very tastefully decorated, and well set up to accomodate large groups with areas to disappear in but large enough common areas to fit everyone as well. As the house is new to the rental market there are still some kinks that the owners need to work out but they are minor and the owners were very open to recommendations and I would expect they will be continuously improving the house. The grounds of the house are extensive and we spent the majority of our time hanging out in the yard or having our meals on the balcony overlooking the amazing view at the front of the house. The house is in a very rural setting in Dordogne so you do need to be willing to drive longer distances to get to any larger town or spend your time in very small hamlets. Or like us you can make the most of the house and spend the majority of your time there! We have booked the house for a week next year which is testament to how much we enjoyed it.
