Description

Our apartment is a bright and airy second floor studio with SW facing balcony in a quiet area, with lovely views from the windows and balcony. It sleeps up to 4 in a double bed settee in the living room and 2 bunk beds in a bed alcove, ie there is a reasonable amount of privacy between the two sleeping areas. There is a bathroom with bath, shower and toilet. The multi functional living room has a bedsettee, kitchen and dining areas. The kitchen area has a fridge, two hotplates, kettle, toaster and all cooking equipment. Also raclette set and slow cooker. There is a fold down dining table and 4 chairs. The space is used very efficiently but is small, ie the table has to be folded away for the bedsettee to be made into a bed, so please be aware that although the apartment sleeps 4 it is more comfortable for 2 guests! There is also ski storage downstairs.

Local information, maps and guidebooks are supplied. Rental of the flat includes bedlinen, 4 towels, heating, HD TV and high speed secure wifi., as well as use of the new washing machine. There is free parking 200m away in the sports centre. There are excellent restaurants, the tourist information centre, a seasonal cinema and an excellent supermarket all within 200m. It is also 2 mins from the bus stop and 7 mins from the railway station on foot for travel in the Chamonix valley.

The flat is a great base for winter skiing or boarding, and also for summer walking and cycling.

The Rhône-Alpes region

The Chamonix valley hardly needs introduction as one of the main centres of Alpine mountaineering. It is situated at the foot of Mt Blanc, at 4810m the highest mountain in Europe. Chamonix is a playground for rock climbing, alpinism, skiing, mountain biking, parapenting and water sports. Historically it was one of the first Alpine areas to be developed, and it remains at the forefront of mountaineering and ski racing. Whatever time of year you visit, there is sure to be some adrenaline sport to try!

Needless to say the scenery is breathtaking. After many trips it still causes me to pause in wonder. And each season has its own appeal, from the stark beauty of winter, to the fields of crocuses in spring, the rich alpine meadows covered in blossoms in summer and the beautiful colours of autumn. There is wildlife too, but you need to be high up to see the local chamois and marmots.

Chamonix is in the Savoie area of France, so of course the food is good! There is a wide selection of local cheeses and dried sausages to try out. Local specialities are good filling foods, with lots of cheese, ham and potato. And of course there are local wines as well as others from elsewhere in France, and a local genepi liqueur.

Culturally there are many festivals. Many of these are based round active pursuits, but there are also other festivals, such as the fight of the Herens cattle in September. The terrific scenery also serves as inspiration to artists and photographers.

Les Houches

Les Houches is a village in its own right with about 3000 residents about 5 miles South of Chamonix centre. It is however closely linked with Chamonix by road, bus and train services. It has more of a family feel than Chamonix itself, and is certainly quieter, without the riotous bars prevalent in the Centre of Chamonix. It has its own town hall, tourist information service and ski school. There are 2 large supermarkets and many smaller shops, ski hire places, a laundrette, cafes and restaurants.

Les Houches is served by 2 cable car systems, the Bellevue and the Prarion lifts, which are the ones usually used for the ascent of Mt Blanc. Together with additional cable cars and tows they make up the Les Houches ski region, which also includes the downhill ski piste, the Aiguilles Verts. Passes can be bought for just this area or for the whole Chamonix valley. Les Houches is also a good centre for walking and cycling. In summer, this area is terrific for walking.
