Location description from owner

The Balearic Islands region

Unspoilt, idyllic, glistening sand, turquoise water… just about every tourist brochure cliché is actually true when you are talking about the beaches in Menorca. Outside peak season, it is still often warm enough to sit in the sun and the temperature is ideal for strolling around the coastal paths.
The island has been quietly encouraging sustainable tourism for years, long before it became fashionable. Its gentle landscapes are ideal for activities such as walking, cycling or riding – with no scary sharp inclines for those of us who are not super fit.
Stone monuments dating back thousands of years are scattered across the countryside, providing markers for a hiking holiday, while ancient coastal paths are being restored to link the neverending series of perfect coves.

Although the season gets going in May and winds down in October, the islands are beautiful in early spring when the almond blossom is out. Outside the hottest months of July and August, all the Balearics are good for activity holidays, whether easy or more challenging, with plenty to see if you are interested in plants or birds.
Sunshine is not guaranteed, however, and you may well hit a rainy patch in late autumn.

To visit :

La Mola
The fortress of Isabel II was built between 1850 and 1875 at the mouth of theport of Mahon, in a strategic place for the defense of the island.

Necropolis at Cala Morell
Near Cala Morell there is a group of artificial caves which were used as a necropolis. The entrance is easy to find, on the road that goes down to the beach, and there are a couple of small parkings areas nearby.

Talaiots and taulas
There are many archeological sites throughout the island that can be visited. The most common monument are the talaiot and the taula.Talaiots are watch towers, a taula consists of a vertical stone which supports above another big stone making the shape of a table.

Ciutadella is the former capital of Menorca and located in the west of Menorca. It much more feels like a Mediterranean town than Maó, with more Moorish than British influence. You here find a lovely old town with small streets, nice old houses and many shops. I loved strolling around there, it really had a special atmosphere! Also, the cathedral and the Diocesan Museum in the old town are absolutely worth a visit, and you shouldn't forget to have a look at the charming little harbour.
It's a great town and you miss something if you don't visit it while being on Menorca!

Tips:

A lot of places are closed in the winter, from November to March. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September.

As Menorca is largely flat, cycling is a good option for exploring the island even if you are not exactly super fit.

Try a dangerously refreshing pomada – Menorcan gin with lemonade and lots of ice, or a thirst quenching Sangria which is a drink made from Red wine, local fruits, lemons, oranges and usually served in a stone carafe.

Fornells

Fornells is on the northern coast of Minorca. It is a peaceful fishing village whose bay is one of the biggest natural harbours on this Balearic Island (five kilometres long and two wide). There are a series of small beaches around the bay, along with the island of Las Sargantanes, where there is a fort that was built under English rule. Fornells has inspired many artists and is within a protected nature area. It is an ideal area for sailing. Don't visit the village without trying one of Minorca's gastronomic specialities: lobster casserole. At the end of July the San Antonio fiestas take place with the traditional "jaleo", with horses jumping up and down to the sound of music.

“Excellent situation”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2015

Interior well furnished, 2 bathrooms. Outside - a terrace with a wonderful sea, hill and lighthouse view and an adjoining patio completely sheltered from any sea breezes. Sunshine all day. The "chic" seaside town of Fornells less than 2 miles away on an inlet forming a beautiful lake with sailing, etc, one of it's restaurants being a favourite of the King of Spain. Stage 4 of the Cami de Cavalls coastal walk less than 2 miles away.

Owner's reply: Thanks for the review of your stay, we are glad you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Yours Stuart & Charlotte
