Menorca holidays

Want a Mediterranean island holiday without the late-night liveliness of Ibiza? Look no further than Minorca. Though it can get crowded (it's named for its diminutive size compared with Majorca, after all), there are so many idyllic coves that you'll always find somewhere to unfurl your towel.

Villas in Minorca tend towards the traditional: tile roofs and whitewashed plaster to reflect the wonderful summer heat. Considering you can have absolute privacy and your own pool for less than a hotel, it's no wonder many visitors to Minorca choose self-catering. If you're determined to save even more, Minorcan apartments are a great value option that preserve the traditional style.

Treasured coves

From well developed resorts to sandy nooks, Minorca's beaches are exceptional. The real gems are reserved for those prepared to earn their suntan, however. Get up early, and you'll be able to park a mere half-mile from Cala Macarelleta. Complete the hike through pine scrub down to the sea, and you'll be rewarded with a view so good you'll think it's Photoshopped. It gets busy by late morning, but the water is warm for hours beforehand.

For families, the Playa Arenal De Son Saura is an excellent choice. A long sweep of white sand near Ciutadella, its warm, shallow waters are ideal for children. For the adults, there's a well-stocked bar at either end of the beach.

If you're in the mood for snorkelling instead of sunbathing, you might try Sant Lluis' little-known Calo Blanc. There's barely room for a sunshade on the sand, but the rocky beach is teeming with fish. Surrounded by boulders and small inlets, Calo Blanc is definitely for the explorers at heart.

Historic day trips

How many island escapes boast rich prehistoric attractions? If all the sunbathing gets too much for you, head inland to see the astounding megalithic monuments of Minorca. The Naveta des Tudons, a short drive from Ciutadella, is a collective tomb that was in use between 1200 and 750 BC. Entry is free on Mondays. Then there are the Taules that cover the island: great T-shaped standing stones up to four metres high and nearly 3,000 years old. No one will expect those in your holiday snaps!
