Please note:
* The cottage has very steep staircases so small children should be supervised (the steepest has a child gate installed)
* Although the road passing the front of the cottage is a back road through a quiet village, it is the only access to the stone quarries at Worth Matravers and surrounding farmland, so there is some associated traffic.

Location description from owner

The Isle of Purbeck region

From the Prehistory of the Jurassic coastline to the rolling countryside of Thomas Hardy's fabled Wessex, Dorset is quite simply a stunning county.

Corfe Castle

Purbeck is officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Jurassic coastline is a World Heritage Site. Much of it is under the ownership of The National Trust. Some of the highlights within either walking distance or a short drive from the cottage are:

· Climbing up to the 11th century ruins of William the Conqueror's Corfe Castle
· Taking the steam train from Corfe Castle to Swanage and back
· Crossing from Studland to Sandbanks on the chain ferry
· Whiling away the day in the old-fashioned seaside town of Swanage with its Victorian pier
· Exploring Durlstone Country Park
· Walking the South West Coastal path
· Taking in the solitude of the Norman chapel at St Aldhelms Head (a Scheduled Ancient Monument)
· Visiting a different beach every day
· Fossil hunting on the seashore
· Marvelling at the spectacular landforms of Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Old Harry Rocks
· Clambering down to greet the sea at the old cliff-edge quarries of Dancing Ledge or Winspit
· Learning about marine life at Kimmeridge Marine Centre
· Exploring the ghost village of Tyneham
· Day-tripping to Brownsea Island
· Taking the kids to Monkey World, Farmer Palmers or The Bovington Tank Museum
· Horse riding on the beach at Studland
· Days out at Kingston Lacey, Athelhampton, Lulworth Castle or Hardy's Cottage
· Scuba diving, sailing, windsufing, kitesurfing, sea fishing

“Fantastic location, lovely cottage with everything you need.”

Reviewed 2 Jun 2014

The cottage is conveniently located just above corfe castle within easy reach of swanage beach and studland bay. The cottage is safe and well equipped with everything you need. The owner is very attentitive to your needs and any enquiries you may have during, pre or post stay. The views from the garden are simply stunning. We would happily re-book.

“Happy Holidays!”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2013

Holidaying with other half, sis and only slightly grouchy 14 year old nephew for a week in a cottage in a quiet Dorset village could have gone one of two ways....happily, the Old Reading Room was above and beyond what we had expected, very cosy, yet roomy accommodation - didn't feel we were getting under each other's feet and pretty much home from home in terms of appliances etc. The very spacious garden and spectacular views over Corfe were the icing on the cake and would have us coming back to stay without hesitation.
