The Sardinia region

Sardinia is a Region which surprises. It offers not oly sea-holidays but also hiking on the mountains and riding on the beaches. There's a deep tradition which starts in the nuragic period (prehistoric), linked to the ship, the horse-riding and the cheese production.
The history is complicated: every one looked to conquer Sardinia, so today we have the marks of it. Marks of Romans, Phoenicians, Bizantines, Marine Republic (Genova, Venezia, Pisa), Piemonte Kingdom and especially Spain Kingdom (Aragona) which ruled Sardinia for 4 centuries!

Alghero

The town of Alghero, only 1,5 km away, has got an historic centre where one can breath the old Catalan soul, admire the ancient , gothic Cathedral; be swept away by the energy of the town during the summery months and lose one's way in the handicraft shops such as the beautiful coral shops. Restaurants, pizzerias, cafés are everywhere, along the sea on the old Bastion, within the town in the old alleys and in the modern part of town.
Besides this “movida”(night life), the surrounding area to the north of Alghero offers beautiful sandy beaches, gorgeous limestone cliffs facing west, interesting footpaths within the Natural Park of Porto Conte where, if you are lucky, you can see some of the wild animals which live there. The southern coast is one of the last wildest place left in Sardinia: the panoramic Alghero-Bosa road is 40 kms in length, it leads you through an unspoilt landscape of coves with green gradations of sea, of rough high hills where the Griffon vulture still survives. At the end it surprises you with unexpected beaches where the fresh water is mixed with the salt water.

“Perfect location, great apartment with welcoming and generous hosts”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2013

Beautifully situated apartment amongst organically grown olive groves with fantastic views of Capo Caccia and the bay. There were some beautiful sunsets over the bay and headland each evening - we've added one image as our screensaver as a reminder of a lovely holiday. The property is attached to Carlo and Maria's house, but is totally independant and secluded, with outside areas to sit, relax and eat (We had lovely BBQ's). It's situated just a few minutes drive from Alghero, but is in a little pocket of peace and quiet. Lovely clean accomodation with attention to detail. An informative and comprehensive introduction to the area by Erica led us to explore areas of the beautiful National Park which we may not have otherwise discovered. Carlo and Maria were so very welcoming and hospitable and always there if required - perfect hosts! A great area for walking, sightseeing, relaxing on the numerous beaches, enjoying the local food or just having a rest. Perfect for us!

“A slice of heaven…a second helping!!”

Reviewed 26 Feb 2013

Yes, indeed…we craved for a second helping! How to resist Carlo, Maria and Erica’s fantastic hospitality. We’d been dreaming to come back to Sardinia and to them! We booked Viburni this time - we’d been in Caprifogli the first time - just to be closer to our hosts and get all the pampering!! Their welcome was simply moving! Once again we were absolutely mesmerized by the views. A few minutes drive from the lovely town of Alghero, the property has the most perfect setting and is truly an oasis of serenity among olive groves and amazing landscapes. Viburni, like Caprifogli, is a real cosy apartment. Excellently decorated, with a great eye to details, it stands close to the manor house and the little 18th century chapel. The apartment’s interior is rationally organized, one can feel Carlo and Maria’s touch and their love for sailing! It was fantastic to relax in the shade during the hot early summer afternoons and enjoy the most breathtaking view of Cape Caccia right in front. Question is: will we ever have enough?...I guess we’re done and addicted! Thank you Carlo, thank you Maria. Thank you Erica for your great tips concerning excursions in the nature reserves around Capo Caccia and more!
