“Tuscany at its best” We stayed here for 2 weeks back in September 2011 - a mixture of family and friends. The villa is in a wonderful setting, high up in the hills and with the most fantastic views out over Poppi and the surrounding countryside. On the first day we were met in Poppi by the family and we followed them to the villa - don't be surprised by the drive to the villa with the last mile or so being on a dirt track/rough road - it's well worth it. Being at the end of the road meant it was so peaceful and we also didn't have to worry about disturbing anybody else. The family aren't fluent English speakers but they are a delight - so friendly and helpful - they are very concerned that you have a good holiday and enjoy staying at their villa. Luigi left us breakfast one morning and a fruit tart another day - he comes regularly to clean the pool and do any maintenance jobs. We spent many happy hours sitting at the long table on the terrace outside the kitchen - eating, drinking, talking, enjoying the view etc. Then there is the loggia above the terrace which was a lovely place to have a drink before dinner - watching the lights coming on in the distance as the sun went down. We went to the Saracen Joust in Arezzo on the first Sunday in September where "knights" on horseback representing the different areas of the town charge at a wooden target and score points according to accuracy. Many of the locals dress-up in medieval costume and we ended up having dinner in the winning quarter during which the winners paraded through the narrow streets - great atmosphere and great fun. We also went to places such as Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Cortona - drove to all these places quite easily from the villa. The old part of Poppi itself is also well worth walking around - a lovely medieval hill town. We had various friends/family members staying with us for different periods over the holiday - several came by train from diverse places - Arezzo (an hour's drive from the villa) was the best main-line station for people to get to. There is a station in Poppi which is on a branch line from Arezzo. We made pizzas one day and used the villa's pizza oven, which worked very well - you just have to make sure it's good and hot. When driving into Poppi from the villa, there is a great local restaurant just when you turn left onto the road coming from the old part of Poppi - they have a lot of tables outside with one of those sail-type shades over the tables. We ate there several times and it was extremely good value - I think we were the only non-locals there - afraid I don't know the name but definitely recommended. We all have wonderful memories of a great holiday at this villa and would happily return there.
