The St Peter's Parish region
Montserrat is a small island of just 5000 people located in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. It neighbours the better known Antigua, which is just 27 miles to the North East, which is also the gateway to this fabulous hideaway.
Montserrat was has an intriguing and contrasting recent past; being the recording location of choice for many world famous pop stars of the 1970s and 1980s. While also enduring catastrophic devestation by way of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and the Soufriere Hills volcano becoming active in 1995. As with the whole caribbean Montserrat is a mountanous volcanic island, and the Soufriere Hills volcano came to life in the late 1990s and wiped out the old capital Plymouth, which had stood in its shadow for almost 400yrs.
Despite this, Montserrat and its inhabitants have moved to the safety of the north, and are steadily rebuilding. These unfortunate circumstances do mean that montserrat remains off the beaten track for 99% of tourists. The island remains completely unspoiled and the wildlife and natural surroundings are truly breath-taking.
Woodlands is widely reknowned as the prime residential area in Montserrat, due to its unspoiled feel, dense natural vegetation and location near one of the best beaches on the island. Woodlands beach is a beautiful grey sand beach, where you can relax, swim, surf, snorkel, dive and even watch Turtle's nesting during Aug/Sep.
