The Old Chequers is a luxury, six-bedroom house with a charming kitchen, a variety of living and entertainment spaces, a large garden, and a brand new games room. Having had a full renovation, the property has all the modern conveniences while keeping its old-world charm. Guests can enjoy a variety of entertainment options, including the hot tub, outdoor dining in the garden and playing pool or arcade games in the games room. In the winter, heating and log burners will keep you cozy.
The Old Chequers is a wonderful property and is the perfect base for large groups of friends or families looking for a peaceful, relaxing retreat in a great location. It has a generous double reception room with a circular dining table that is great for playing board games. The reception room provides the central access point to the rest of the house - the open plan kitchen and dining area, living areas, and the main staircase.
The modern kitchen has solid wood worktops and is well equipped with a large freestanding oven and separate grill, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, coffee machine, milk frother, kettle and toaster. The dining table seats twelve and you can squeeze a few highchairs around it if you needed to. The utility room holds the washing machine, tumble dryer, an additional dishwasher, sink, and two fridge freezers.
The various entertainment spaces have been cleverly divided up to cater for all staying in the house. You could either sit next to the cosy log burner in the "library" or enjoy a movie on the large corner sofa in the TV room with a surround sound system. A sunroom conservatory, that gives access to the private walled garden, further enhances the living spaces. We've recently added a dedicated workspace with a mounted screen, office desk, and high speed internet. We are connected to high speed fibre internet and the smart TVs have Netflix, Amazon video, etc.
The latest addition to our modern holiday home is a separate games room that promises to be a hub of entertainment for guests of all ages. Featuring a stunning pool table, TVs, and arcade games, this room provides the perfect opportunity for friendly competitions and memorable moments with friends and family.
Our garden features a hot tub and a decking area with outdoor furniture. During the summer, we often enjoy al fresco dining on this deck. The lawn is great for kids who want to run around and play lawn games. Please note the the River Burn runs through the property in a shallow stream, and we'd recommend supervising children to prevent accidents. Our own kids enjoy paddling in the water and love seeing the ducklings that sometimes visit. The garden has a Webber BBQ to flip a few burgers and sear a nice steak or some fist-sized scallops if you are lucky enough to pick some up from the local fishmongers at Burnham Market. There are lights all around the garden wall and creake, so you can appreciate the garden at night.
The pebbled courtyard on the north side of the house has been thoughtfully furnished to add additional social space. It is a cosy corner to tuck away into at night time with the fairy-light lit skyline, dining table to enjoy alfresco dining and a seated fire pit area to keep warm on the chillier evenings.
All bedrooms have their own en-suite bathroom, Bluetooth speaker, wardrobes, and exceptional quality mattresses and linen. The pillows and duvets are top quality imported down and feather to ensure they are temperature regulated for the different seasons and the bed coverings are all high thread count cotton to ensure the best night’s sleep whilst staying at The Old Chequers. The master bedroom is truly spectacular, with its super-king bed, vanity desk, dressing room, and luxury en suite. The master en suite has a large, freestanding bath, heated floors, and a walk-in shower. Our wheelchair accessible bedroom is the only bedroom on the ground floor, and features a wet room shower with a removable shower chair. In addition to the six bedrooms, each with either a super-king or king size bed, we also have a sofa bed in the Ante room (next to the master bedroom) and a bunk bed in the master bedroom. We find these additional sleeping options are very useful for families with kids. The second bedroom and the ground floor bedroom have the option to be made up with either twin beds or a super-king bed, and you can let us know which you prefer.
Our History
The Old Chequers, previously the Chequers Inn, is nestled in the quiet village of South Creake on the North Norfolk Coast. The Inn was the center point of South Creake village for over 300 years as the local pub to the neighbouring brewery, which is no longer in operation. This historic pub building has recently been beautifully renovated and furnished to a very high standard.
