The Crete region
Crete (Greek transliteration: Krete, modern transliteration Kriti) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8,336 km² (3,219 square miles).
Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (ca. 2600–1400 BC), the oldest Greek civilization.
Today Crete is one of the thirteen peripheries of Greece and a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece. While it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect), Cretan identify themselves as Greeks.
For centuries the island was known by its Italian name Candia, from the medieval name of its capital Heraklion, Chandax. In Classical Latin it was called Cretan and in Turkish Girit.
Crete is the location of significant ancient history, which provides popular modern day tourist destinations. They include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian old city and port of Chania, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge.
Roussospiti, 6 kilometres far from Rethymno, is located on the roots of Vrissinas, 300 m. above the sea level. Among the few places in Rethymno, where the Venetian era masterpieces are perfectly preserved, you should visit the Venetian fountain in the centre of the village, the wall painted church of Panagia, as well as the Venetian buildings in the place “Kamara”.
Leaving the city centre to the east, we find, direction right, Theotocopoulou Street, which we keep following.
Going up the road leading to the hill, 7 kilometres from the diversion sign to Mikra Anoyia, we reach the newly preserved Monastery of Agia Irini, next and south of the drop having the same name.
Following the same road we reach the Venetian buildings and the fountain in Roussospiti after two kilometres.
From the same point we continue to reach Chromonastiri, where one can visit the churches of Panagia Kera and Agios Eftihios, as well as the Venetian Villa Clodio. Leaving Chromontastiri, 1,5 kilometers south we arrive at the deserted Myloi village. To visit Myloi one has to cross the path and the gorge in which the village was built. The village was named after the many water mills having existed; when visited one can enjoy the rich plantation and its picturesque view.
Getting on the road again to Rethymno, we meet to the left side the church of Panagia Halevi and the ruins of the monastery. The same road will lead us to Missiria area. Rethymno is 3 kilometres away from Missiria.

"Simply excellent for family with children"
The villa was well equiped with all wat's neccecary and more. Beautifull swimming pool with (at our villa) a separate area for small children to play. The villa is also very spacious, large bedrooms and above all very clean. Different balcony's so every one can find a perfect spot to relax either in the sun or in the chadow all day long. Located in a small village on a mountain side away from tourist areas so you can enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. There is also a beautifull hiking path in a gorge nearby with ruins of old watermills. Having a rental car is advisable to go explore the wider surroundings of the island. We enjoyed our stay very much!

We stayed at Villa Eva, one of the Aloni Villas in Roussospiti. We booked it through Thompsons as a package which included a car. the Villa itself is well equipped with a balcony for every occasion. The welcome pack of cake, honey, fruit, oil and wine provided by the owners, George and Stella, was excellent, with the Raki being some of the best we tasted (and we tried a few!). The hosts were very friendly and helpful. There are several villas in the village run by the same family, and each has its own private pool, which is a decent size and illuminated at night. The Villa itself was well equipped and has a balcony for every occasion- one for the early morning cuppa outside the bedroom, one for lunch with views over Rethymnon, one overlooking the pool for breakfast, and one for the laundry. The facilities in the village include two (good) Tavernas and a village shop which is friendly and has lovely ice-creams. There a re lots of cats and dogs in the Village, so you will not be alone if you do a barbeque! It is on a bus route into Rethymnon, which is about 6km distant, but a car is recommended for getting about. Rethymnon itself is lively with lots of shops and zillions of restaurants. We would not recommend the Sunset trip on Barbarossa, which is overpriced and pretty dull, but the trip to walk the Samaria Gorge is well worth the fee, if you are fit enough. Crete is surprisingly beautiful.
A couple of warnings- Thompsons fly in and out late at night, which means finding your way to the Villa at midnight on strange (and later we discovered precipitous) roads, encountering Greek driving for the first time (they love to pass on corners) with only a quarter of a tank of petrol. Upgrade the car- Thompsons give you a Matiz, which is too small- and ask for a full tank. If you can book the Villas direct, do so. And the directions to the Villa from Thompsons were poor- take a SatNav.

"just gets better"
The accommodation was fabulous. Fabulous location, new air conditioning system throughout and a lovely new patio area. Stella 2 was already lovely. Recent improvements have ensured the high standard of provision gets better and better. We were really well looked after. Nothing was too much trouble. The standard of customer service is very high, thorough, yet personal. Laundry facilities, cleaning etc. were of the very highest standard. Great place. Very quiet with good local amenities. The city of Rethymnon is a 15 minute drive.

"An excellent clean, tidy and well maintained villa"
We stayed in the villa named Clio 2 and found it excellent for our requirements. We all thought the villa looked better than the images on the websites. The turning into both Clio villas could be missed but as long as you are in the well signed posted Stella 1 + 2 complex you are there.
There was only 3 of us travelling which made It very spacious, clean accomodation, easliy ok for 6 people. All your needs are in the villa including 3 good showers and a good air conditioning system when required. Villa layout worked well, bedrooms were downstairs with 2 of them having access to the pool area, in this villa there was also stairs leading down to the excellent pool area from the balcony off the living area. In the village was a well stocked local handy store and two tavernas which were reasonable but we preferred driving into Rethynmon (about 10 minutes away) where there is loads of places to eat. Be aware although its a must to eat now and again around the pretty old harbour area, they promote fish dishes and are very good at disguising the pricing and you end up paying probably 40 euros minimum each for your main course! Other dishes were available and were not much more expensive than other tavernas.
George the owner is great, he gives you as much or as little help or guidance as you want. Good to see cleaner come in 3 times in the week and bedding changed each time.
We all enjoyed our stay.

"We didn't get to stay long enough!"
We were really impressed by the villa and how beautiful the setting was. We really liked that we were outside of the city, but close enough to get there easily. The teenagers liked the internet and we liked the beautiful villa and the gorgeous views. George was a wonderful host and left us fresh fruit, a bottle of wine, a bottle of olive oil and of course, some Raki! Next time we go to Crete (and hopefully there is a next time!) we will stay there again!
