The Crete region
Crete (Greek: ???t?, transliteration: Krete, modern transliteration Kriti) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8,336 km² (3,219 square miles).
Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (ca. 2600–1400 BC), the oldest Greek civilization.
Today Crete is one of the thirteen peripheries of Greece and a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece. While it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect), Cretan identify themselves as Greeks.
For centuries the island was known by its Italian name Candia, from the medieval name of its capital Heraklion, Chandax. In Classical Latin it was called Cretan and in Turkish Girit.
Crete is the location of significant ancient history, which provides popular modern day tourist destinations. They include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian old city and port of Chania, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge.
The Rethymno / Roussospiti area
Roussospiti, 6 kilometres far from Rethymno, is located on the roots of Vrissinas, 300 m. above the sea level. Among the few places in Rethymno, where the Venetian era masterpieces are perfectly preserved, you should visit the Venetian fountain in the centre of the village, the wall painted church of Panagia, as well as the Venetian buildings in the place “Kamara”.
Leaving the city centre to the east, we find, direction right, Theotocopoulou Street, which we keep following.
Going up the road leading to the hill, 7 kilometres from the diversion sign to Mikra Anoyia, we reach the newly preserved Monastery of Agia Irini, next and south of the drop having the same name.
Following the same road we reach the Venetian buildings and the fountain in Roussospiti after two kilometres.
From the same point we continue to reach Chromonastiri, where one can visit the churches of Panagia Kera and Agios Eftihios, as well as the Venetian Villa Clodio. Leaving Chromontastiri, 1,5 kilometers south we arrive at the deserted Myloi village. To visit Myloi one has to cross the path and the gorge in which the village was built. The village was named after the many water mills having existed; when visited one can enjoy the rich plantation and its picturesque view.
Getting on the road again to Rethymno, we meet to the left side the church of Panagia Halevi and the ruins of the monastery. The same road will lead us to Missiria area. Rethymno is 3 kilometres away from Missiria.

A excellent location. The villa is very well situated and offers the leisure you need after all the stress of daily life. It's extremely comfortable, everything you need is present end it is large with all the comfort. Very nice view towards the sea with shade and the wind from the sea providing nice balconies to relax and to read. On the other side the sun with a fantastic pool, providing a lot of joy. Rethymno is just a 10 minutes drive. And Georgios. You are really welcome. Fruits and vegetables from his own garden, wine and raki and a simple: "the key is on the door". Your holiday starts immediately. Excellent value for money. When we return to Crete, we return to ALONI villas as well. |

Wonderful villa and it had everything we needed. Giorgos was so welcoming, and it was so lovely having melons and tomatoes left for us from the farm. We would certainly recommend this villa. However, it's a steep walk to the local taverna and there are no buses so you are completely reliant on car. The villa would not be suitable for disabled as the bedrooms are downstairs (we were in Clio 2) . Besides all the usual tourist visits like Knossos there are a few must do's..... Visit chromonasteri and look round the olive mill and have coffee under the olive trees and visit the military museum. Also a must is a swim and pedalo around kourna lake and visit the village of Lappa and nearby waterfalls at argiroupoli, which we only discovered via one of the leaflets for the yellow train but was not in the guide books. |

The villa was gorgeous, set beautifully in a small village high in the mountains. it was immaculately kept and our every need was catered for. Everything was done discreetly and well, cleaning / linen, the pool general pastoral care. All of our arrangements were made really easy and trouble-free. Aloni Villas were a pleasure to deal with and I will definitely do this again. |
