Hastings, Sussex

There is a huge range of places to visit in Kent and Sussex with more castles, stately homes and gardens open to the public than any other area of the country. Added to that, there are numerous museums, galleries, steam railways, vineyards and much more to add to your list of what to do in Kent in Sussex. Include some of the big names such as Leeds Castle, Hever Castle, Chartwell, and the gardens at Great Dixter, Sheffield Park and Sissinghurst Castle on your itinerary, but be sure also to include some of the less well known gardens, such as Pashley Manor, Emmetts, Nymans, Penshurst Place and Riverhill Himalayan Gardens to create a visit full of variety.

Discover some of Britain's key historical sites such as Battle Abbey & 1066 Battlefield the site of the Battle of Hastings, and experience impressive castles such as those at Bodiam, Dover, Walmer and Tonbridge. There's plenty for families too at Kent Life, The Rare Breeds Centre, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway - and even two wild animal parks in the heart of the Kent countryside at Howletts and Port Lympne. And for the adults, how about sampling some award winning wines produced at Chapel Down Winery?

The Seven Wonders of the Weald are a group of visitor attractions located in the beautiful High Weald along the Kent and East Sussex border, and all within a short distance of one another offering variety and interest for visitors, including Biddenden Vineyards, Chiddingstone Castle, Groombridge Place, Marle Place Gardens, the Kent & East Sussex Railway and Scotney Castle.

And don't forget some of the fascinating towns and villages in the Garden of England when deciding where to go in Kent – including Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tenterden, Cranbrook and Westerham. And in Sussex, try Rye and Battle – full of history and interest

"Very well equipped, extremely comfortable cottage in a lovely location."

Pleasant walks along rural lanes, nearby beaches, historic sites and Country Houses/Gardens all within easy reach. The owner is extremely knowledgable about the area as well as very friendly and welcoming. Nearby pub serves good food if you want a rest from cooking in the kitchen which is fully equipped with everything one could need.Abundant wild life to watch in surrounding grounds, also plenty of activities are provided for children. Three visits so far - and there will be more.

"The sort of place that you immediately feel relaxed and at home in."

The owner is very approachable, helpful and friendly and is usually on-hand. The property itself has a wonderful homely feel with wonderful views over the countryside. Arriving gives a wonderful sense of tranquility and getting away from it all. The pub almost opposite is a gem and like stepping back in time but with a menu to suit most tastes. It is well placed for visiting cosmopolitan Hastings for its interests, quaintness and hubbub whilst well positioned for contrasting Rye and Winchelsea beach.

The setting is wonderful. There's not much not to like about this place-except sometimes the weather.

"Fabulously clean and equipped cottage - very friendly and helpful owner."

We have stayed at the Retreat several times over the last 4 years, and have always found the cottage well equipped and very clean. All conveniences are there, including a library of books / magazines for those wet days! Also a comprehensive number of leaflets etc. giving details of all local events/places to visit etc. It is a very quiet place, set well back (approx. 100 yards) from the road, and overlooking, at the rear, lovely open countryside. Within easy reach of Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Rye etc. along the south coast, and only 3 minutes drive from the local beach. A great place for a restful break.
