About this location
The Yorkshire region
The North York Moors has been designated as a National Park, not only for the large expanse of heather moorland , but also for the valleys with small villages, stone formhouses with pantile roofs, and fields with stone walls.
The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, and at each stage man has left his mark on the landscape. There are burial mounds, tumulii, standing stones, abbeys, churches, stately homes, museums, steam trains. Iron was mined in Rosedale and alum was manufactured at numerous locations, including Carlton Bank. The landscape is outstanding and the views are breathtaking.
Other attractions are Castle Howard, Rievaulx Abbey and the North York Moors Steam Railway from Pickering to Whitby.
Alternatively you can relax in the peace and tranquility of Raisdale or go for walks directly from the cottage onto the heather moors.
Walking, cycling, touring or simply relaxing - this is the place for peace and tranquility

"Our stay was not long enough we didn't want to leave"
Unfortunately we had only 4 days at Forge Cottage as we had travelled from Australia and we were wanting to see as much of the UK in a month as we possibly could.
The owners of Forge Cottage were there to greet us when we arrived and we received a very warm welcome.
Forge Cottage met all our needs. The cosy fire kept us warm and the comfortable beds gave us a great night's sleep. The well equipted kitchen supplied everything we needed. It was just lovely to wake each morning to the sound of birds in the trees and the little stream out back. We drove to Stokley and also went to Hemsley for a day and enjoyed the sights of the lovely village.
I would highly recommend the cottage for anyone who wants a break away from the hustle and bustle of life.
But be prepared- -you won't want to leave!
Pleased you enjoyed your stay. Spring has now sprung, the countryside is looking beautiful and the birds are busy. Hope you had a good journey back home.

As some friends and I were attending a conference, we decided that staying out of the town would be much more pleasant and afford some time to relax. How right we were! Forge Cottage was lovely, warm … More
Thanks for your kind words, many people comment on the peaceful setting here. The surrounding countryside is like a winter wonderland in the snow. We have moved the router so there is now a stronger wifi signal to the cottages. Look forward to seeing you next time - Jean & Mal

"Having the splendid Yorkshire Moors at your backdoor."
I stayed at Forge cottage for fourteen days in September 2012. Forge cottage is one of the two Raisdale Mill Cottages, lying in a small valley in the North York Moors.
On a no through road with only two neighbours, the place was everything I expected. I just needed to step outside to find an abundance of nature, wildlife and breathtaking views of the hills and valleys. Besides the sound of singing birds and murmuring water from the small stream beside the terrace, there was just silence. Beautiful small towns, pubs with good food and shopping centers are within a few driving miles.
The cottage had everything I needed to have a nice, comfortable holiday: a well equipped kitchen, fine beds, comfortable sofa and chairs, good quality TV and in the evening the warmth of the wood-burning stove. When I arrived, the fire in the wood-burning stove had already been lit; it made me feel welcome indeed!
The only thing that wasn't so good was that, at the end of my holiday, I had to leave...
And there is this little story. Within a day I had a LAT relation with 'one of the locals' that was living in the ferns near the stream. From his point of view, Forge cottage was not a holiday home but a restaurant. Every morning a big thick pheasant was waiting at the terrace. He made me work like his private waiter. One glimpse of me and he was at my backdoor. If he have had a watch - I'm sure - he would have looked at it impatiently. The pieces of bread I threw at him were measured with a strict view. I almost could hear him thinking: can't you do better, bigger, faster, …more like the ones before you? Dutch eh? Dutch generosity?
So if you go to Forge cottage, be prepared! It's not only relaxing, you have to work too....!
Thanks for your amusing review and I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay. The pheasant is surviving, so far! The central heating is now running quieter as I have released some air from the system. Looking forward to seeing you again - Jean
