The Central Hungary/Danube region

The Retreat Cottage is located in a small village, Pákozd, near (5 kms or 3 miles) Lake Velence, and close to (50 kms or 30 miles) Budapest. Ideal place for a retreat from all, or explore Hungary during day trips.

This booklet gives you ideas for local activities, such as beach activities at the lake, horse riding school in the village, walking at hills that start one street away from the cottage, or at the nearby arboretum.

Horse Riding

One of the most popular programs in Pákozd is horse riding.

Capitol Lovarda is well respected county-wide. It specializes in a wide range of activities from very beginner level to horse racing level. They also started horse therapy for disabled children and adults. Booking can be made the week before the lesson or you can pop by to set up time.

This program can be very memorable for children (from age 3) as they ride around the horse school fields and do some exercises on the horses in a safe way on their first horse riding session. Do not forget to bring an apple that the horse will surely deserve at the end of the session. 1-2 minutes to get there by car from the cottage.

There is a nature reserve at the village, and it is worth visiting the “rocking stones” (Ingokovek), a unique geological granit formation phenomenon in Europe. The small Bella Lake near the cottage is a good starting point for a long walk (green signs) or could be just the aim for a short walk. The nearby arboretum covers 96 ha of beautiful spots in the Lake Velence area. It awaits visitors with a pond, picnic facilities for families, and an “adventure castle” for children. The lookout tower offers a marvellous view over Lake Velence. A romantic path under the canopy of the trees leads up to the lookout tower.

Lake Velence and its vicinity

Lake Velence is the second largest natural lake and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary. Its area is 27 sqkm, one third of which is covered by reeds. It is a natural reserve with bird species unique in Europe. Based on observations, the region boasts the largest number of sunshine hours in Hungary. Owing to the 1.5 m average water depth and the large number of sunshine hours, the water temperature reaches 26-28oC in summer. Rich in minerals (sodium and magnesium), the water of Lake Velence regenerates the fatigued body and eases rheumatoid symptoms. Its beaches and shores also await those who prefer active holidays.

For a shorter beach or swim programme, we recommend the Velence Vizi Var beach, which has a beach front with some playing fields and water slides. However, for a proper beach experience - suitable during any weather conditions - we recommend the Venece Resort&Spa Beach. Here, you have the lake beach but also inside and outside pools, including medicial thermal and fun pools, as well as wellness facilities. Take a surf lesson, or try the electric waterbikes too.

The Etyek-Buda wine region and the prestigious wine cellars in Mór and the Budafok region, which can be visited separately or in as part of an organised wine tour, offer wine tasting combined with local food specialities and delicious experiences.

Within Pakozd, the Ingoko Restaurant offers quality food, mainly typical Hungarian menu. The restaurant itself is located by the village shop. However, you may find it more convenient and pleasant to order lunch or dinner to be delivered right to the cottage. A full menu in Hungarian, English and German is located in our cottage for your convenience. The packing and delivery charge will be included in your bill payable upon the delivery.

Visit Budapest

With a vast array of sites, museums, as well as streets, squares, restaurants, cafés and stores with a unique atmosphere, Buda Castle and the whole of the Castle District are among the most well-known and frequently visited tourist attractions of Budapest. The Royal Palace, where many battles and wars took place from the 13th century, is a symbol for Hungary. In addition to three churches, including the Matthias Church (or Buda Castle Main Coronation Church), located on Szentháromság (Holy Trinity) Square—a monument with long history, one of the most beautiful and well-known catholic churches of the city, the Castle District also includes five museums, several buildings of historical interest as well as memorial sites and theatres. The Fisherman's Bastion and the square in front of the National Gallery offer a breathtaking view of one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube.

Guest e-Booklet with further information on day trips to Budapest, Lake Balaton, and Szentendre, as well as 'Budapest for kids' program recommendations are available for guests.
