The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The Pirin mountains are Bulgaria second highest , highest peak Vihren (2,914 in), 176 mountain lakes and about 100 varieties of rare plants, including the edelweiss and the famous Baikousheva fir, almost 1,300 years old.
Location of the well-known ski resort at Bansko.Here, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, the houses look almost like monasteries - just as austere and inaccessible, with high stone walls and small latticed windows.
The true Bulgarian spirit is hidden behind the solid walls and heavy gates - in the spacious rooms with friezes and bay windows, carved ceilings and doors, pretty rugs and embroidered cushions, in the murals, icons and amazingly carved iconostasis of the Holy Trinity Church (1832-35).
Bansko area
The Bansko mountain resort is situated in south western Bulgaria, at the foothills of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains - Pirin, which is a national reserve, included in the World Natural Heritage list.The distance from Sofia to Bansko is 160 km.
Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopes mountains, Bansko is a climatic mountain resort with a short summer and long winter. The average temperature during January, the coldest month, is minus 1,9 C. Snow falls are abundant, providing a constant winter snow cover up to 2 m thick. The skiing season along the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends in mid-April.
The resort offers good opportunities for all types of skiers - from the novice to the expert, while the ski runs are maintained in an excellent condition. The town itself attracts visitors by its 120 cultural monuments, its museum-houses and the permanent ethnographic and Bansko school of icon painting exhibitions.
A very interesting sight is the Holy Trinity Church with its 30 m high ball tower and clock,splendid murals and woodcarvings. The region is famous for its cuisine and colourful folklore and offers various entertainment opportunities.
How to get there
Fly into Sofia airport. Easyjet has been found to be one of the best cost effective airlines, and can also cater for short weekend breaks at a good price as well.
Bansko is approx 2 and half hours drive from Sofia. Transfers cost from 150 Euro for 4 people. Alternatively, you can hire a car relatively cheaply from Sofia airport.
