“Special” This Villa lived up to all expectations and more. We pre-hired a car (go Rent a car - a small firm but seemed to be very reliable, other than his sat-nav) and then it was all so easy and special. The owners met us on the main road. The Villa was large, well-fitted out, cool and very clean. 2 bathrooms added to the convenience. The view sitting by the swimming pool looking across the hills to the sea was spectacular. It was splendidly isolated so very quiet, yet only 4 minutes by car to the local supermarket although it was expensive. 8 minutes however took us to the chain supermarket (Lidl) - whilst this meant we were not putting as much hard needed cash into the local economy, it was good enough for our basic food for breakfast and lunch and we could buy local fruit and vegetables elsewhere. At the very bottom of the hill in Platania is a pizza shop that bakes the most amazing take-away pizza made with local feta cheese. And the villa is an easy drive to Rethymnon (15 mins) and also both Heraklion and Chania (less than an hour each) - all 3 towns very touristy but interesting in their own different ways. There are also some lovely drives going along the coast where we stopped for great views, the lake at Kourna and to the south wonderful drives through the mountains. All of this supported by a folder of really useful local information provide by the helpful owners, Argiro and Nikos. We were 2 elderly couples but I can easily envisage having brought my children here when they were younger - they would have loved it - the pool, the space to run around and explore, the touristy towns and the beaches. A couple of tips - the Villa is at the bottom of a steep drive. It was better to park on the road at the top of the drive because driving back up was not good for the car. Secondly, we are vegetarians and found it was best to order a number of starters, especially some of the local dishes, for our main meal - and we enjoyed the free desert in most of the restaurants.
