Larger towns situated near are Alston and Stanhope which are a 15 minute drive away where there is a greater selection of shops and Durham, Newcastle, Carlisle, Hexham and the Metro Centre and all within 3/4hr to an hours drive. There are many interesting places to visit in the North east and the cottage is situated on the borders of Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland making it an ideal base for people who would like to have the opportunity to visit a range of interesting places. Hadrians wall is located within an easy drive as is the lake district and the historic town of Durham. Indeed the Scottish border is only an hour away if people were inclined to see some of the border towns.

For those peple who enjoy walking this is an ideal base for walkers being set only a few hundred yards up from the Historic Weardale Way and Wesleain chapel and museum.

The property is accessed through its own private entrance from the raised viewing deck. The accomodation is beautifully appointed with a cosy living area with white leather suite to seat three and wall mounted TV with sky free view. The log burner will keep you toasty warm in winter but guests are asked not to use it during the Summer months when the Swallows and bats are nesting along the eaves. The newly refitted kitchen area is fitted with a modern fan assisted oven and hob and under bench fridge with small freezer compartment and micro wave. The dinning table can seat 2. The bedroom is decorated with Laura Ashley wall paper and has a king sized bed on a solid oak bed frame and Myers pocket sprung and memory foam mattress. Luxury high quality Alpaca duvet and pillows are used on the bed.. The ensuite bathroom is beautifully appointed with LED lighting, illuminated anti mist mirror, cast iron bath and hand held show unit. The bathroom has an isolated electric towel rail to keep towels warm. There is also a small dressing/utility area with a full length mirror and Bosch washing machine.

For your comfort and convenience the cottage is fitted with state of the art digitally controlled electric radiators designed to give ambient zoned climate controlled heating.

The cottage has "Orbi" state of the art "Mesh wifi" installed and this eradicates any weak signal points in the property.

Outside the property benefits from a balconed deck overlooking the valley and the hills beyond. On summer evenings meals can be eaten out here. There is a small fully enclosed terraced garden beyond and car parking for one car on the gravel drive to the front of the property. There are steps down from the car park to the cottage gate.

Well behaved pets are very welcome free of charge but we would kindly ask for a refundable deposit to cover possible damage caused and would ask guests to make sure the garden is clear of dog mess before they depart. Failure to do so will result in a claim against the damage deposit for extra time required to make good the garden for on going guests. If your are bringing a dog under a year old or more than 2 dogs please contact us before booking. Kennelling is also available if preferred as is a pet sitting service for those days or part days where you may want to explore minus your dog.

Location description from owner

The England region

The north East is steeped in history with the renowned Beamish Museum 50 minutes away and well worth a day trip and it will take a full day to take in the vast amount of exhibits on offer at the museum. Many people who come to the north east for a holiday also want to see the world famous Hadrians wall and the unspoilt and picturesque Northumbrian coast. Durham city beckons many visitors who amble around the city centres winding streets and visit the Castle and the Fabulous Cathedral. Newcastle is famous for its welcoming people and the many cultural venues and famous night life. The royal Shakespeare company class Newcastle as its second home with annual seasons of RSC productions taking place at various theatres in the city. The theatre royal has under gone a massive refurbishment and world class theatre tours to this venue regularly with a plethora of renowned actors having graced the stage there. The quayside at Newcastle is now a popular tourist attraction aimed at pedestrians in particular. The Baltic flour mill art gallery stands proud on the Tyne having been there for many years seeing the industrial nature of the river change over the years. The fantastic glass Sage really demands a visit if only to see the magnificence of the structure. However the design means that acoustics inside can rival any auditorium world wide. The Lake District is only a hour and half away and Beatrix Potters museum is a must!

Weardale

The Area is classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with many old building and farmsteads dating back to the 1700s. It is thought to be a walkers paradise with many ancient footpaths and byways that take you deep into the heart of the North Pennines. Cycling is safe and a popular means to enjoy the area and visit the many interesting beauty spots and local pubs. Weardale is locally famous for having a church and a pub in every village, so something for everyone! The area is well known in Methodist history as a place visited by Wesley, who famously preached at the bottom of the hill leading to the cottage, before the chapel was built. The tree under which he preached is said to still be standing. There is a classic railway running through Weardale and also a steam engine running at Alston. Alston is only 11 miles away and is the highest market town in England and is famous for being the set for the 1968 film of "Oliver!". The area has a history of iron ore mining and there are two museums dedicated to this industry at Killhope and Nenthead, which offer escorted under ground tours from April to September. There are opportunities to see a good selection of wild life and birds not seen in many parts of the UK today. Weardale has the southern most Ski lift and run in the UK and is open in winter when weather permits. There are a number of pubs where food is also on offer and an Italian restaurant based in Wolsingham. The cottage is well situated for visiting a number of towns and cities in the area including Carlisle, Newcastle, Durham, Hexham and Penrith.

Getting around

There are local taxis but a car is probably necessary if guests are wanting to get about. The pubic bus service runs along the main road about half a mile for the cottage and routes can be taken on the bus to all the main cities around the area, but would need to be planned. The Weardale bus company do run excursions through out the year and some of these might be on interest to guests. A railway does run in the valley during the Summer season.

Interaction with guest

We always try and see guests into the cottage and make sure they have our contact details. We will try our best to offer suggestions for places to eat and places to go if asked and we are on hand to deal with any issues if they arise. However we will not contact or call in on guests once they have arrived as we don't wish to intrude on their privacy.

“Cosy cottage with lovely view”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2016

Easy to book, beautiful welcome with homemade bread, butter and milk together with wine, chocolates and fresh flowers.the cottage is well furnished and equiped and the downstairs bedroom and bathroom is stunning. Lovely little touches with butterfly towels and bedding. The small garden patio is lovely to sit out on to admire the view and share a glass of wine or two! The garden was well enclosed for the dog. The surrounding areas are breathtaking with so many walks to do and although we didn't visit Durham this is easily done. Pub in St Johns Chapel is basic but we had a good steak and on any other evening we drove to Allenheads Inn in Allendale for the most amazing steak pie. A must is the walk along High Force to Low Force and onto Gibsons Cave where you can stand under a waterfall. If you want a peaceful break away from the hustle and bustle and are prepared to drive quite a bit to get to places this accomodation provides a romantic base for this remote part of the U.K.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Butterfly Cottage. A car is a must unless guests just want to chill out and walk the hills locally. High Force is about 15 minutes away and local restaurants are dotted along the Wear valley in most of the villages with a good selection within a 20 minute radius. As the cottage is on the Northumberland, Durham and Cumbrian borders the main cities and towns of Newcastle/Gateshead, Durham, Penrith, Carlisle, Hexham and Darlington are all within an hours drive away so for people wanting to dip into several counties the cottage is well located.
