The Isle of Purbeck region
Purbeck is part of the world famous Jurassic Coast.
It has been inhabited since ancient times and signs of dinosaurs are scattered over the beaches and along the cliffs. In more modern times Corfe Castle was the scene of many an epic saga and its ruins are well worth a visit.
Since medieval times the area has been a source of the world famous Purbeck Stone used to construct many fine buildings.
All of this is history is celebrated in the unique Durlston Country Park, probably one of the first 'theme parks' ever to have been constructed for the pleasure and education of the 'ordinary person'
Throughout Purbeck there are fascinating things to do and see, from Monkey World to the Tank Museum, and from the delights of Poole bay to the sombre reminders of Tyneham Village.
The coast has a huge selection of beautiful isolated beaches, and bracing walks through glorious countryside or along the cliffs.
Popular with sailors, rock climbers, fossil hunters, walkers and cyclists there is always whatever your fancy
Swanage is a lovely seaside town, with a main beach designed specifically for families with children offering the traditional pleasures of a seaside holiday. Further along the beach there are wilder parts where other water sports are available such as jet skiing.
There are thriving rowing and sailing clubs, and if all that activity is too much you can while away the hours crabbing with lines - usually a big hit with the very young.
Swanage works hard to give you a good time and there are many organised events and festivals, Check on line for the festival dates - the Literary festival, Arts festival, Jazz festival, Blues festival and Folk Festival are all hugely popular events.
Throughout the year there is plenty to do and when it all gets too much you stroll across the downs and stare dreamily across to the Isle of Wight or Bournemouth, and if you are really lucky you might even get to see Dolphins swimming in the bay.
Just a short walk through the shopping street takes you to the station where you can get on a Steam train to Corfe to visit the ruins and enjoy a fabulous cream tea in one of the excellent cafes
Our house is located right in the heart of it all!
Swanage benefits from a great selection of shops, all just a short walk from the House. Within two or three minutes you can reach lots of good places to eat including traditional English Pub food, great fish and chips, seafood, fine dining and even Indian, Chinese and Greek
