Location description from owner

The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente Maritime boasts the second longest hours of sunshine in France after the Cote DAzur and summer here seems to stretch from April to October. With over 70 beaches to enjoy you will rarely feel crowded and you can almost have the place to yourself out of high season. The local seafood (oysters, mussels, crab and fish) is always fresh and plentiful and there are many good local wines, pineau and cognac to accompany your meal.

Surgeres

Surgeres is a picturesque market town just to the south of La Retraite. It has a wide choice of restaurants, supermarkets, shops and banks. It has a beautifully restored and preserved old walled town rich in architectural heritage and boasts a manor house and XV1c chateau.
The colourful covered market (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) offers a plentiful supply of local produce including the butter for which Surgeres is famous.
The town has a cinema, sports centre with tennis courts, and open air swimming pool.

La Rochelle is a beautiful old town less than half hour away. It is an excellent place to visit, either for a day, an afternoon, or just an evening at any time of the year. It has hundreds of restaurants to choose from ranging from quayside bistros offering moules and frites to the Michelin** restaurant Coutanceau recognised as one of the best restaurants on the Atlantic Coast.
La Rochelle comes in two equally alluring halves. The old port is full with yachts and guarded by medieval defensive towers, while the town centre has delicatessens and classy boutiques under the covered arcades of Renaissance houses and a colourful morning fish market.
During the summer months there is street theatre every day and a craft market alongside the port most evenings, when the roads are closed to traffic to make space for performers, craftspeople and artists.
La Rochelle houses Europe's largest marina on the Atlantic Coast and a fabulous aquarium. Its beautiful parks are worth a visit and the famous yellow cycles can be hired free of charge for the first 2 hours all year round. Boat trips are available from the Old Harbour, lasting a few hours, half a day or a full day to the islands of Re, Aix and Oleron.

“A lovely house with extras”

Reviewed 25 Sep 2014

We spent a lovely week at La Retraite. The house was spotlessly clean and very well equipped to a high standard. There wasn't anything we needed that wasn't there. The broadband was slightly dodgy but that stopped us all burying our heads in our phones/tablets so in hindsight was a positive. The owner provided use of bikes and there were toys/games/dvd's to cover all our childrens ages - 1-12. It would have been nice to have a restaurant or bar within walking distance but other than that I cannot fault this house.

Thank you for your kind review. We had a few comments about the wifi over the summer so we have now replaced the router and also have a range extender into the lounge. We have not experienced any interruptions in service since.

“Absolutely perfect!”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2014

Our group of 6 adults and three toddlers was amply accommodated in La Retraite. The bedrooms are a good size as are all the living rooms, and with three bathrooms there was never a “queue for the loo”. The whole house is lovingly decorated with quirky pieces of artwork. Just about anything you can imagine needing or wanting is there. The garage houses lots of bikes of varying sizes and a good selection of outdoor and pool based toys for the children. Inside the house there is a cupboard full of toys. The kitchen is stocked with a huge selection of crockery and cutlery plus a whole cupboard full children’s utensils. There was enough to enable us to only use the dishwasher every couple of days. We ate most of our meals at the huge dining table on the patio area and the dining room houses an equally impressive dining table which we used for breakfast most days and a couple of times when the evenings were a bit cooler. The highlight of our stay was a marvellous meal of fresh fish bought in Surgeres and cooked on the BBQ – none of us had ever tasted fish quite like it! The garden was perfect – shady bits for those not so keen on the sun and open areas for those who wanted to 'fry' themselves. The pool is a good size for adults and children, although even the 'shallow end' was too deep for our three year old – which did not really matter because he spent the entire holiday throwing himself off the edge and into the water! An electric gate makes the garden totally secure so you don't have to worry about the little ones wandering off. The small town of Mauze is just 3km away and houses a perfectly good Inter Marche supermarket. For a bigger selection (not to mention the the biggest selection of wines that any of us had ever seen) the trip to E Leclerc in Surgeres is well worth the effort and is only about 10 – 12 km away. All in all a wonderful holiday. The owners deserve full credit for providing such a wonderful place to stay – thank you Alan. Our group of 6 adults and three toddlers was amply accommodated in La Retraite. “An amazing find and such a beautiful place to stay.”

We had to pinch ourselves when we opened the electric gates, La Retraite is such a beautiful house and set on some amazing grounds. Alan the owner was fantastic to deal with and was very responsive, he had thought of everything in order to make the holiday perfect for the adults and children. A quote from one of the little ones... ' mummy I feel rich' and that sums up the experience. We had a fantastic holiday, this house is perfect for everyone whether a large group or to use as a cosy hideaway. We will definitely be booking La Retraite again.

“Perfect!”

This was our second visit to La Retraite with friends, family and dogs, the house is so well equipped it suits everyone. The pool area and garden is beautiful with varied seating areas, the owners really have thought of everything. The house is in a quiet location but very easy to get to local amenities, we cycled to Mauze to the local Boulangerie and Supermarket, our daughter was a bit more adventurous and cycled to Surgeres. We also visited Il de Re with fabulous beaches and St Martin which is a lovely place to sit and have a meal or just a coffee. We would also recommend a visit to Coulon with its Canals and boat trips. La Retraite is a great place for a holiday, Alan is extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble, he even books the vets appointment before the journey home and we will definitely visit again.

“A gorgeous house and pool, loved everything about it.”

We stayed at La Retraite for one week with our two children aged 17 and 9 along with our friends and their son aged 18. Booking was easy and the owner Alan was most helpful providing lots of info regarding the house and local places of interest before our departure. On arrival we were delighted to find the property immaculately clean and true to the photographs shown. The house is very spacious, plenty of room for everyone and a wonderful homely feel, nice comfortable furniture, interesting art and great objects decorate the house perfectly. This is a house that is much loved by its owners. The Kitchen was well equipped with everything one would need. Plenty of seating for everyone to sit down together, wether indoors or out. The pool was a great size, and when not in use was perfectly safe as it can be gated with padlocks and the pool fully covered. Lots of bikes, games, a vast selection of books, dvds and internet connection all available for our use. We all thoroughly enjoyed our holiday, we did venture out to sightsee various places as recommended by Alan, which were all nice. We were on other occasions more the than happy to just stay at La Retraite in its relaxing environment and just simply chill. I would recommend this property without a doubt. Actually I would rather keep it a secret so it's not fully booked when I next choose to return ha ha.

“Beautiful, well-equipped house, perfect for groups with young children”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2013

We have just returned from a wonderful week at La Retraite. We were 2 families with 5 children under the age of 6 between us. The house was perfect for us all - plenty of space and well-equipped. And a really beautiful place to spend a week in the sun. We chose the property because of the safe gated pool, and the good location. The gated pool worked very well for the 1, 2 and 4 year olds who were kept out when we weren't swimming (although our 5 year old was able to jump over it! This was not a problem though). The pool was great, and a good temperature. The dining area outside was in shade much of the day, and perfect for us all to sit down together. The snug was great for film watching, and they have a good selection of DVDs. We didn't leave the house much except for a trip to Surgeres for lunch, which was great, but the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. Would thoroughly recommend La Retraite.

Thank you very much for your kind review. I would just like to point out for the benefit of potential future guests that the pool has a hard retractable solar powered cover operated by a removable key. The cover meets all pool safety requirements in France and is designed to take the weight of a young child.

“Perfect from start to finish”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2012

This holiday villa booking was efficient from start to finish. Not only did the owners provide a property in excellent condition but they even booked the local vet on our behalf to meet Pet Passport requirements on the return journey! This is obviously a much loved second "Farmhouse style" home and so it is kept as such. The pool is comparatively new with a convenient electric cover and as required in France is secure from toddlers . The extensive gardens were also secure which meant that our dog could roam safely. The location is very convenient with Ile de Re and La Rochelle within 30 minutes and the lovely town of Surgeres approximately 5 miles away. A large supermarket (Intermarche) was a 5 minute drive.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Retraite. The House, the pool and the gardens are lovely, well looked after and kept! The area was also great, with lots to do and see! We will definitely be considering a return trip!!!

“Great house for a family holiday”

Reviewed 12 Jun 2012

La Retraite is a beautifully presented traditional French house, in a great setting. The village has excellent arterial links, making it quick and easy to reach locations such as La Rochelle, Ill de Re and La Venise Verte. Great beaches within c45 mins drive, but the outdoor pool is perfect for a lazy sunny day.
