Description

La Fumade is a large French farmhouse, renovated with everything you might need for a relaxing and comfortable holiday in the hills of southern France. The garden borders a year-round stream and the house is surrounded by the protected forest, orchards, hiking trails, and mountains of the High Languedoc Natural Park.

Less than an hour’s drive from the Mediterranean, the house gives you easy access to the sea as well as the rivers, lakes, mountains, and wineries of the Languedoc. The medieval village of Olargues, only a few kilometres away, is officially listed as one of the most beautiful in France.

The rustic house is part of a small hamlet of three houses and a number of barns and stone ruins, situated on their own just outside of a village. Nestled in the hillside, the house and garden are quiet and private.

The Occitanie region

In the heart of the real south of France, the Languedoc region has a rich and colourful history that is reflected in both the people and the countryside. France's largest wine-producing region, the Languedoc (and the Herault in particular) is the home of the AOC appellations of Corbieres, Minervois, Saint Chinian, and Faugeres.

Saint-Etienne-d'Albagnan

Just a few kilometers from the house, the medieval village of Olargues (http://www.les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org/en/olargues) is classified as one of the most beautiful towns in France ("Les plus beaux villages de France"). The area has a number of outdoor activities, including climbing, kayaking, canoeing, golf, cycling, and walking. The house is in a secluded countryside setting, and is only a few kilometers from all services, supermarkets, shops, and restaurants.

“Idyllic Getaway in the Haut Languedoc”

Reviewed 23 Aug 2015

This was our third stay at La Fumade, and I cannot say enough good things about it. The weather this time of year is stunning, the house is comfortable, spacious, beautifully renovated, and easily accommodates two or three couples or small families. I spent a lot of time by the pool, and at night, well, dining outside under the wisteria-laden pergola is my image of paradise. Also the house is right up against an immense national park, which we hiked until we dropped, then soothed our sore muscles that night in the hot tub. I love the location - secluded and quiet, surrounded by gorgeous mountains - but close enough to dozens of small towns and medieval villages that we have no problem finding spectacular restaurants. And the wine! The food! An easy drive to St. Chinian, where the Sunday market alone is more than worth the drive. Can't recommend it highly enough.

“A luxurious retreat from the hurly burly”

We drove down from England, overnighting on the way, and arrived late and in the dark. The directions and sat nav coordinates could not have made this easier. The next day we woke to silence and isolation. This was exactly what we needed. We spent the next ten days pottering around the local area, food and drink is excellent (although in September everything that can be is imbued with sweet chestnut). Support from the host, when required, was prompt and quickly resolved issues. These were only minor though and did not detract in any way. Utilities, including internet, were included, worked and the instructions for the house were accurate and clear allowing us to quickly settle in. We hope to stay again.

“Beautiful home - everything you could need for the family.”

This home is perfect for the family that wants all the comforts of home in a great location! We couldn't have asked for more. It was easy to find and not far from large villages, but still secluded in the beautiful mountains. The views are amazing. We were able to easily come and go from the home to do several day trips around the area. We didn't feel that a week was enough time to do everything! The home itself satisfied all of our needs from a wonderful kitchen that allowed us to prepare family meals to the amount of space in the bedrooms and separate bathrooms. The owners have thought of everything to make your stay unforgettable. We will definitely rent this house again.

“Fabulous house in the hills.”

We had a great holiday. The house is perfect, everything you could need is there. The furniture is nice and the beds are so comfortable. Great value for money and plenty of room for 10 of us. You do need to be organised, it's quite a drive to the shops but there is quite a good choice of supermarkets. The outside area is lovely, surrounded by forest, we saw eagles, badgers and goats, very rural! Superb seating area and we loved the pool. I would recommend you take good mosquito repellent, we all got bitten. Not for you if you want to be in the middle if everything but if you want a get away from it all holiday this place is perfect.

“Lovely house and pool in beautiful but fairly remote areof France”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2012

This house has a very cool and minimalist feel to it but it is cosy at the same time. The large table under the overhanging wisteria on the pergola is a godsend for very hot days. Some small folding garden type chairs to carry around chasing shade or sun would be good, as wooden ones are very heavy. Although remote the nearest road is a main thoroughfare to places nearby. The nearby lakes make a swimming day with a beach possible. Nearby Orlargus is a must to visit and so French. We would reccomend this house to people who like beauty and peace and quiet.

“A totally relaxing stay in a large and comfortable house in a beautiful part of France”

Reviewed 10 Aug 2011

We (2 families with a teenager each) had a lovely stay at the property, which is very well equipped, spacious and comfortable. It is located in a sheltered spot at the end of a quiet, winding lane. We enjoyed the plums and figs from the trees surrounding the house, and watching the badgers who seem to live somewhere in the gully nearby. The spot is ideal for those who enjoy wildlife as we saw owls, red squirrels and even heard the sounds of a distant sanglier. The local area is wonderful for walking and fishing (permits from the tabac on the right side of the road as you enter St Pon). We enjoyed the local markets and restaurants and braved the rapids on the beautiful river Orb. There are plenty of maps and walking guides available at the house, thoughtfully provided by the owner. There is a renovation going on nearby but during the two weeks we were there we were not disturbed by the builders, who came by only once or twice. We all enjoyed the pool and hot tub and overall we would highly recommend the property.

“Fantastic rustic french farmhouse, pool, hot tub, incrediby relaxing - going back!”

The farm house is large, 5 beds and half way up a hill so secluded and very quiet. The house has all modern amenities including TV for those who need it. The patio is sunny in the morning for breakfast and lunch and dinner can be had under the pergola. We really enjoyed the quiet and seclusion. Lovely wineries nearby and excellent food available in the local supermarket (including organic store) - half hour drive, though small shop in village for basics. Also near Olargues which has two excellent restaurants with others including michelin starred within distance. If your idea of a holiday is family, friends, wine and food then this is great, if you want to walk to a bar it's not (you can't). Pool is lovely and heated as is the decadence of the hot tub. Great walks just behind the house. All the bits and bobs - bedding, towels, cutlery etc all there as you would expect. Local Scottish couple (they do the change over) available to help if you need it. You need a car!! Beach / airport an hour away for days out and local railway station 30 mins. We were told Barcelona if you fancied it a 3hr drive. As self catering the rating for service and check in not really relevant. Has washing machine etc. Clean and tidy.
