The Tuscany region

Tuscany's warm and and welcoming locals, its fresh and delicious food, its mild winters and warm summers, its rolling hills, vineyards and midieval hilltop fortresses, the art and architecture of Florence and Siena - all of these make Tuscany an ideal destination for families.Thermal baths and spas dot the surrounding countryside, as do vineyards and olive oil factories open to the public. Less than an hour away from LeFontanelle, take in the fabulous sights of Florence and Siena.Just under two hours away, Pisa - with its Leaning Tower and its budget airline airport - is also a pleasant day-trip, using LeFontanelle as your home-base.At virtually any time of year, there are food, art and music festivals in one or more of these cities. Check online for what's happening during your visit !

San Gimignano

Nearby SanGimignano is one of Tuscany's best-know hilltop fortress towns. Also called "the midieval skyscraper town", San Gimignano is well-known for its skyline of Renaissance towers. Situated along what was once the major pilgrimage and troude route to Rome - the Frankish Road - San Gimignano's churches and public buildings attract visitors from all over the world. Enjoy San Gimignano's many cafes and restaurants, many with views of the vineyards and farms of Tuscany's rolling hills. Across the valley, Volterra is Italy's epicentre of Etruscan art and culture - and also a location for one of the plot-lines of the recent best-selling books and films about vampires called "Twilight", "New Moon" and "Eclipse". According to legend, Volterra's ruling family at one point were vampires, and some of the art and architecture of Volterra hints at this.

“Excellent value Tuscan villa in a lovely setting”

Reviewed 27 May 2015

We stayed in the Agrifolo apartment at Le Fontanelle in May 2015. I was visited with my partner and my parents as we treated them to a Tuscan trip to start the summer. The villa was lovely - simple but tasteful (much better than the photos suggest) inside with plenty of space. It was well-equipped, very clean and comfy. The pool is large and although rather chilly in May, was a real highlight, giving great views over the surrounding woodland. Not many apartments give you such a good sized pool. Kristina the apartment owner was incredibly helpful - over email and phone. Our bags were lost by Ryan Air, but Kristina and the caretaker Allessandro (sp?) helped us ensure their return to the villa within a few days. The villas are a little difficult to find, so be careful to follow the directions given. It's a 10 min drive to the charming San Gimignano - a great part of Tuscany - so cars are needed. We found getting taxis quite tricky. We wanted to all be able to go out for a meal and sample the wine on the last night - so we went to the Tourist Info in San Gimignano to get a list of local taxi drivers. But even then we had to phone 5 to find one that was available & it took a lot of explaining to get them to the location. So definitely plan ahead if you're planning to use taxis! Kristina - it might be helpful to get a list of these for keeping at the villa. We had a lovely week, despite a fair amount of rain. Definitely recommend staying here! TOP TIP - book an evening at Le Vecchie Mura restaurant. Ask for a terrace table with a view! Try the gelato in San Gim and go for a walk in the woods surrounding the villa.

“Fabulous holiday!”

Reviewed 25 May 2014

We had an absolutely great holiday in Tuscany. La Fontanella is ideally located to everything we wanted to do. 10 mins to beautiful San Giminiano, less than an hour to Florence, Siena and Chianti. Comfortable house, lovely terrace, very friendly caretaker. We will definitely go back!

“My Tuscany dream”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2013

My husband and I, and another couple stayed at Le Fontanelle - Agrifoglio for one week in July. It was an excellent place to stay at while touring around the area. We loved the low key feeling of Le Fontanelle. It was quiet, and we had the pool to ourselves every time we went for a swim. Our villa was clean and spacious for 2 couples. It was fabulous to cook some meals while in Tuscany. It had everything we needed. I was nervous about no air conditioning, but this wasn't a problem at all. The bedrooms were downstairs and were cool at night. We loved that there were no bugs! The location was perfect for us. Most days we drove to little towns, and explored the lovely Italian country roads. We stopped at wineries and had lovely food along the way. The only thing I wished for was that we had booked longer than 1 week. I think 10 days would be perfect. Then there would be enough time for exploring and relaxing!! Thank you for a dream vacation in Tuscany!!

“Awonderful base from which to explore Tuscany”

Reviewed 7 Dec 2011

Our family of two adults and two teenagers loved our 6 week stay at Le Fontanelle. The proximity to San Gigmignano, Florence and Volterra was excellent. Bus and train service from Poggibonzi to Florence and Siena was also great. We enjoyed meeting other families in the other units. The caretaking and managment staff were extremely helpful. Great pool and amenities - lots of sun . Simple and attractive decor.
