Top tips from the owner:

You have to eat at the restaurant “Da Paola” in Lonnano at least one evening, which is a 5-minute walk from Villa Caterina. It is a family style restaurant that is open by reservation only. Once reserved a table, Paola will serve you excellent homemade tortelli and ravioli, following the ancient Tuscan recipe handed down from one generation to another. Other restaurants where you can eat are: “I 4 Cantoni” in Pratovecchio, the "Pizzeria da Vincenzo" in Stia and the restaurant "La Torricella" in Poppi.

If you enjoy playing golf, a 9-hole golf course is available in Poppi.

In Poppi, you can also visit the park Zoo with your children.

The Casentino is a valley full of medieval histories and much more, here is what you can see and visit in some towns of the valley:

- Stia: do not lose the opportunity to visit the castle of Porciano, Piazza Tanucci and the Palagio Fiorentino.

- Pratovecchio: do not miss a visit at the Castle of Romena where Dante Alighieri lived during his exile.

- Poppi: its Castle and its old town are a must.

- Bibbiena: very nice old town.

- Chiusi della Verna: the sanctuary of La Verna, where St. Francis of Assisi lived, is worth a visit.

Leaving from Villa Caterina and continuing along the uphill road, after about fifteen kilometres, you will reach the Sacred Hermitage of Camaldoli.

In addition to all the places that Casentino offers, you can visit the cities of Florence and Arezzo which are just one hour drive from Pratovecchio. In an hour and a half drive, you can reach Cortona, Siena and San Gimignano, and in two hours drive you can reach Pisa.

Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

The Casentino is the valley in which the first tract of the river Arno flows to Subbiano, Italy.
It is one of the four valleys in which the Province of Arezzo is divided. Mount Falterona, from which the Arno starts, represents the northern boundary between the Casentino and Romagna. On the east of the valley are the Alpe di Serra and the Alpe di Catenaia, which separate the Casentino from the highest tract of the Val Tiberina. On the west there is the Pratomagno, which separates the valley from the Valdarno Superiore. Part of the valley is included in the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona, Campigna National Park.
It can be said that the valley has an oval form, with an extension across the river that varies from a maximum of 60 km to a minimum of 30. The topography of the Casentino is especially various, including both plains and mountains rich in large forests. These mountains have often attracted great saints: it was here that St. Romuald built his hermitages at Camaldoli, and that less than two centuries later St. Francis of Assisi established the Sanctuary of La Verna, the headquarters of the Franciscan order.
The valley's biggest comuni are all located in the Arno valley: among these the biggest are Bibbiena and Poppi, while Capolona, Castel Focognano, Castel San Niccolò, Pratovecchio, Stia, Subbiano are more or less smaller. The villages located on the neighbouring hills and mountains are much smaller. These are Chitignano, Chiusi della Verna, Montemignaio, Ortignano-Raggiolo .

Pratovecchio

The "Golf Club Casentino": The course is situated on a hill with a magnificent panoramic view on the Arno Valley, the green heart of tuscany. The nearby national park as well as numerous historico-cultural sights like medieval castles and monasteries make a visit, not only to golf, worthwhile. The Casentino Valley is a place rich in history where you can discover medieval villages and castles, Romanesque parish churches and places of worship known all around the world. Once also the supreme poet Dante Alighieri stayed here. Around the area you can also find signs of the Etruscans and Romans who inhabited this land in ancient times.

“Great and larghe house in a beautiful place”

Reviewed 3 Dec 2014

We wanted a house suitable for 3 generations on a relaxing vacation together, and that is what we got...and more! Lots of space both inside and outside, a great and child-friendly pool, nicely kept surroundings and a beautiful view of the mountains. Furthermore, our host was very friendly and always helpful. So all in all it lived very much up to our expectations.
