Population: About 1 416 000
Climate: Oceanic
Capital city: Caen

Just across the Channel from London and not very far from Paris, you will find the welcoming region of Normandy with its varied coastline and rich countryside. 600 kilometers of contrasting seaside with cliffs, pebbly coves and long stretches of golden sands make it an attractive destination for the holidaymaker. Beaches nearb include Agon Coutanville with its quant little boutiques and restuarants, Monmartin sur Mer, miles of sandy safe beach for the family. Family resorts along the Cherbourg peninsula and the whole coastline are warmed by the Gulf Stream. Further along the coastline Deauville, Trouville, and Cabourg are well established and desirable seaside places. Granvile, the home town of Christian Dior. Granville;s Street Carnival where 1000's flock to each year.

Inland, magnificent forests, tranquil streams flowing lazily through rich agricultural countryside and apple orchards are the hallmark of this sedate and fruit producing region.

Excursions include the Cider Road and the Cheese Road. And if the pace is too fast by car, you can hire a horse drawn carriage. In every corner, you will discover hidden treasures : the pretty harbor of Honfleur, the Bayeux Tapestry, William the Conqueror's birthplace at Falaise, the basilica at Lisieux dedicated to Saint Theresa, Claude Monet's treasured garden at Giverny, and the world-famous Mont Saint Michel, with its breathtaking views from the ramparts.

Normandy is a rich gastronomic area with its fresh fish ("when Dover soles cross the Channel, they arrive in Dieppe") and shellfish, duck, cream and, of course, the famous Calvados and cheeses like Camenbert, Livarot, and Pont l'Evêque.

There are golf courses at Agon-Coutainville and at Breville sur Mer, both about a 30 minutes' drive away. The world-famous facility at Omaha Beach is about an hour's drive away.

Driving time from ferry ports: Caen/Ouistreham 1.5 hours. Cherbourg 1.5 hours. Le Havre 2.25 hours. St Malo 2.5 hours. Calais/Boulogne 4 hours (non-stop). Use of a car is recommended, if you wish to gain the maximum from your stay, however keen cyclists or hikers will find plenty to explore within the scope of a day's journey.

Distances
Many of the D-Day beaches, sites, museums and war cemeteries are within an hour's drive. The city of Bayeux 50 mins, the National Stud at St Lo 20 mins and Villedieu-les-Poeles (copper industry, bell foundry and nearby zoo) 35 mins. The nearest big shopping centres are Coutances (15 mins drive) and St Lo (20 mins).

Further details
The neighbouring village of Cerisy la Salle (0.5km) has a butcher, two bakers, a post office, a bank, two supermarket and a Tourist Information office. There are markets every weekday in some town or village within a short drive.

Normandy is world famous for its dairy produce, its cider and its fiery apple brandy, Calvados. In summer, many local farms, dairies and other establishments open their doors for visitors to come and see the manufacturing process - and sample the goods!

All along the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula are centres for sailing, windsurfing, land yachting, sea-kayaking and fishing. The undulating countryside in this part of Normandy is very popular with cyclists. There is a five-day festival in Montpinchon around the feast of St Laurent (11 August), featuring a series of cycle races as well as a large fair, a car boot sale and a livestock market.
