Location description from owner

The Rhône-Alpes region

The French Alps extend from Lake Geneva in the north, to the mediterranean in the south and are bounded by the Rhone Valley to the west and the Swiss and Italian borders to the east. The highest peak, Mont Blanc, rises some 4807m/15771ft, but the altitude gradually decreases towards the south and the ranges are easily accessible through a series of deep and wide valleys. The region is famed for magnificent views which appear to change with every bend of the steep winding roads. It is an area full of contrasts, from the colourful shores of Lake Geneva through the gentle mountains surrounding it, to high alpine pastures, rocky outcrops, and to the glaciers of Mont Blanc and the Tarantaise. The region and local area is one of outstanding natural beauty.

La Baume

The Portes du Soleil (doors of the sun) is an area of mountains in France and Switzerland just south of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva). The house is within this region and is located in a small hamlet just above the village of La Baume. It is situated overlooking the valley of the river Dranse which runs from the Haute Savoie mountains into Lac Leman. The house faces south-east into the valley and gets the morning sun. Its altitude is approx. 800 metres above sea level and local mountains are typically 1800 to 2000 metres high. There are interesting places to vist nearby, including the Gorge du Pont de Diable at Le Jotty, a medieval abbey at St Jean D'Aulps, and the incredible mountain setting of Lac du Montriond. There are many local walks or alternatively you can just relax and enjoy the clear mountain air in a very peaceful setting. There are many beaches around the shores of Lac Leman and many possibilities for sportspeople including white water rafing on the river Dranse, sailing and canoeing on Lac Leman, and climbing for those with a head for heights. There is a variety of sporting activities available in nearby Morzine or you can enjoy leisurely boat trips across Lac Leman for stunning views of the mountains and Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc itself is a little over an hours drive away and, aside from its altitude, boasts the longest and steepest single span cable car in the world. In winter there is access to the entire 600km of the Portes du Soleil ski area with access via Morzine (15/20mins) , Les Gets (20mins) or Ardent/Montriond (25 mins). Smaller ski resorts are at Col de Corbier and St. Jean D'Aulps, both 10 minutes drive away.

“A well equipped chalet situated in a rural setting with superb views”

Reviewed 11 Oct 2012

The chalet is well situated for those who enjoy being in a quiet hamlet while being central enough to enjoy the mountains and sight seeing via a short car journey. The views from the front door are superb! It was great to be able to go for a long walk on sign posted trails directly behind the chalet, though the first hour was steep walking! We were content to stay in the valley for the most part except for 2 or 3 days were we ventured further afield. We enjoyed another walk to the top of another alp and with fleeting cloudy views of Mt Blanc in the distance. We visited the same "hill" two days later from the other side but this time we "cheated" by taking the cable car & chair lift! Mt Blanc was visible this time! The weather was very hot for the first seven days thought the chalet was pleasantly cool. The hot weather meant that the children enjoyed swimming in Lac Montriond (10 mins approx from Morzine) and Lake Geneva. The journey from Calais to Geneva via motorways was easy driving. The ten days passed quickly and the whole family had an enjoyable time.

“Great place”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2012

2 adults and four teenagers stayed at this house for a weeks skiing. The house was ideal and the location was close to the slopes. Peter was a great host and everything went smoothly despite some extreme temperatures. The house was kitted out as you would expect.

“A delightful rural retreat”

Reviewed 15 Jun 2012

An absolutely beautiful location with easy access to many local attractions which abound. As you would expect in this rural area you need a car. A simple spacious and well equipped property. Lots of room for our young family and great kitchen. We had an amazing holiday here. I would happily recommend this property great value
