Location description from owner

The West Yorkshire region

The grit stone country of pennine Yorkshire is characterised by rugged moors and dramatic scenery. West Yorkshire was known for its wool and cloth production but many of the mills have now been adapted to house shops and museums, others such as Britain's only surviving clog mill at Hebden Bridge are still producing the original goods.

Holmfirth

Upper Denby is a beautiful village to explore with it's wonderful stone cottages, cottage gardens, local public house, historic church and listed tythe barn which is of great historical importance. Nearby is the small town of Holmfirth with its quaint shops and small independent cinema and theatre. Holmfirth is also the home of Bamforths, producers of the famous saucy postcards.

Homfirth was also used as the location for the television programme 'Last Of The Summer Wine'. Visitors can see Norah Batty's house which featured in the series and visit the museum dedicated to the programme. Holmfirth holds an annual 'festival of folk' in May with many artists preforming from around England. There are often continental markets held on the streets.

“Beautiful cottage, lovely stay!”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2016

We stayed here for two nights and already fell in love with the cottage and its beautiful surroundings. We have 4 young kids and they were fully occupied with toys, indoor games and plenty of space to run around. The cottage itself is very spacious and beautifully decorated located. The welcome pack was very generous indeed. We unintentionally left a leather belt and my son's phone charger, the owner Catherine was very kind to post it to us free of charge. Thank you Catherine and Charles!

Fantastic find, made to feel so welcome. This cottage has the most beautiful gardens and the home has all its original features. The free range chickens left us the most beautiful eggs for breakfast. The local pub The George was great for a short stroll in the afternoon we sat out in the gardens. We went across to Holmfirth & also visited The Kirklees Light Railway with our 4 year old son. The house itself slept 4 adults & one child very comfortably. The bedding was very comfy and smelt very fresh. The house was immaculate and very homely. The kitchen had everything we needed and lots more and we also enjoyed out door dining along with a bbq. Already planning 2 more return trips, Catherine makes this place so welcoming such a beautiful lady making sure our son had lots to play with and made him feel so welcome. Look forward to returning in the near future. 5/5

“Pretty English cottage in Yorkshire”

Reviewed 12 May 2014

We (a family with two teenagers) had a great twee week holiday, staying in the Manor Farm Cottage in Upper Denby (Hudersfield, Yorkshire). We love the way the owners have put together the cottage. It's four star, and we really appreciate the value we get for our money. Its very clean and well maintained. It has everything a modern family needs: a nice selection of books and dvd's, internet connection and a washing machine. There are two spacious bedrooms (one for the kids and one with a double bed, which was a bit soft to my liking). On the ground floor there's a small living room, a big kitchen with a dining table, a bathroom with toilet and bath, and a pantry with a washing/dryer combination. The cottage looks and feels very British, with lovely decorations. The owners are very nice people. You only see them when you want to. They take execellent care of everything. On arrival, all the basic groceires where there, including coffee, tea, milk, fresh eggs, and even a newspaper. Next to the front garden there's a field with alpaca's, sheep, a goose and some chicken. This makes for a very pleasant sight. Yorkshire itself is great. We love the landscapes and the nearbuy museums and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Highly recommended!

“Spacious, tastefully furnished, peaceful period farm cottage with private garden and wonderful views.”

The cottage is set back from a quiet road with plenty of private parking for the car which was very convenient. We had a warm welcome from the owners and were provided with a marvelous welcome pack of quality food items and a bottle of wine which was very helpful when we first arrived. We were able to entertain friends immediately with wine on the sunny terrace and coffee and biscuits. We had two adult children with us so we appreciated the spacious feel of the cottage and the homely, high quality feel of the furnishings and fittings. Every room had fabulous views, with the alpakas, sheep and goose in the field opposite providing added interest! We were able to invite friends for lunch in the large, well equiped country kitchen with its central table. The comfortable sitting room was perfect for relaxing, reading or watching TV. The bedrooms were large and very comfortable. I would love to return in the summer when you could really take advantage of the private garden with its lovely views. My only slightly negative comment would be that the bathroom was downstairs but it was not a problem for us and the fittings were very adequate. All in all a lovely stay but simply too short! We will return.

“Fantastic Stay”

The cottage was as I expected and so much more, Much larger and homelier than I thought it would be and I had high expectations. Everything was provided that would be in a home all you needed were your clothes. Just perfect. Catherine was the perfect host, there was a quality basket of goodies and fresh eggs for us on arrival. I don't think there was anything forgotten. we stayed 5 nights and loved every minute, Perfect highly recommend to anyone who wanted a real English cottage holiday.

“It's the little things that make this cottage so special!”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2013

Last year we stayed in a sweet but very tiny cottage. So Manor Farm Cottage was a breathe of fresh air for us, with 3 very bouncy kids. A large kitchen diner, a comfortable lounge, a huge family bedroom for the kids and a decent double for us was just what we needed. But it was the food parcel, including fresh eggs from the owners' chickens, a huge array of toys, DVDs, books and sweets for the children, a lovely garden complete with BBQ and a Little Tykes car (our 4 year old was in heaven!) and then Catherine popping round with strawberries she had just picked - it was these things that made Manor Farm Cottage so special!

“Everything you need for a relaxing, easy break”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2013

We stayed in the house for a week as we wanted to catch up with friends and relatives in the Yorkshire area. The house was excellently situated close to the motorway for getting around however it was still in a peaceful rural setting. The enclosed garden was superb for our 20 month old to run around in and there were plenty of games and toys provided which kept him amused indoors. We entertained extensively in the cottage over the course of the week and found we had everything we needed bar food and drink to enable this. We had very hot weather when we stayed at the house but we felt it would be lovely even in poor weather. Our welcome was warm and friendly and we were provided with a great selection of essentials (milk, bread etc.) to get us started on arrival. I didn't realise staying in self catering could be so easy!

“Lovely, well-maintained and very tastefully furnished farmhouse.”

My wife and I have rated this property as the very best of places (B&B's, hotels) we have stayed during our 3+ week vacation throughout England and Scotland. The house is exceptionally clean and well-maintained and we appreciated the detail and tastefulness of the furnishings and amenities. All the fixings for breakfast from farm-fresh eggs, milk, butter, bread, jam, etc. make this house in country surroundings special indeed. The owners, Catherine and Charles, are friendly and special and will go the extra mile to make your stay comfortable and memorable.

“Beautiful cottage, 5* hospitality & great value for money!”

Reviewed 12 Jul 2013

I stayed at the cottage with my husband, 2 children & 2 friends of ours, having booked it for the weekend as we were attending a wedding close by. We arrived (late) after a very long journey from London and the hospitality from Catherine was second to none! She had food, wine, freshly baked bread & even eggs from the chickens in the garden as well as numerous toys for the children. Not only did Catherine's welcome take us back, but the cottage was absolutely spotless! Seriously, the cleanest house I have ever had the privilege of staying in. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. I would absolutely recommend this property and advise as long a stay as possible!

“A lovely place to stay”

Reviewed 12 May 2013

A very warm welcome is always welcomed especially when a wonderful selection of goods is provided to save on the first shopping trip. Very comfortable, bedrooms are a nice size. Only draw back is the toilet is downstairs. Would recommend a visit to this cottage. The George, being the local pub is only 100 yds away. The Dunkirk a mile further on does some very nice meals which the The George does not provide. I found the Wi-Fi which is offered not to be that great on reception.
