La Maison Sans Souci is a charming farmhouse set in the beautiful Normandy countryside a short drive from the village of Hambye. Our two gites, Le Coquelicot and Le Bleuet, are in the converted barn next to the farmhouse and have their own garden with children's play area, above-ground pool, and games room. Each gite sleeps 6 and can be booked together for larger groups.
Le Coquelicot has recently been refurbished to provide a more comfortable stay, and is perfect for couples exploring the area and families..
The gites are located a twenty minute drive from beautiful sandy beaches of the Normandy west coast that never seem to get busy. The warm shallow sea is lovely for swimming and at low tide you can watch the local farmers with their tractors tending the acres of oyster and mussel beds.
A 5 minute drive away is the village of Hambye with its boulangerie for warm French bread and croissants in the morning. It also has a butchers, a small supermarket for everyday needs, a bar/tabac, and two small weekly street markets. Newly opened (June 2014) is the little bar/restaurant, L'Adresse, serving both a lunchtime and evening menu everyday up until September. A little further away is the restaurant at the Auberge de L'Abbee, which has a wonderful ambiance. The varied menu provides a perfect choice for a special meal. The nearby romantic ruins of the Benedictine Hambye Abbey set on the banks of the River Sienne, are also a fascinating place to explore with some beautiful walks round about.
The area provides the perfect opportunity for fishing, walking, cycling, and exploring the cider orchards, as well as sampling delicious food and drink; cheese, cider, pommeau and calvados.

Some of the stone walls have been left exposed, as have the beams in the upstairs rooms.
Each bedroom is comfortably appointed and provides ample storage and has an electric radiator for those chillier nights.

The rear garden is large and mostly laid to lawn with views overlooking the local countryside. Le Coquelicot has its own patio area with chairs and a table for al fresco dining, and there is a separate play area for children with swings and a see-saw. At the bottom of the garden is the above-ground pool with landscaped seating area. This spot gets the sun all day long and well into the evening, so is a fabulous place to relax and soak up the sun.
At the front of the property is a large lawned area with picnic tables, a hammock, a swing seat and a pretty pergola with a wooden bench; a lovely place to sit and listen to the birds in the evening.
Within the barn there is an upstairs games room with table-tennis, table football and a darts board. This room is shared with Le Bleuet gite.
The Basse-Normandie region
The Normandy region of France combines dramatic coastline, with lush farmland, bustling market towns, and historic landmarks. From the days of William, Duke of Normandy and King of England, to the drama of the Normandy D-Day landings, you will find yourself surrounded by key historical events. Gastronomic delights abound, from the fine cheeses to the fresh fish, to the cider and the Calvados. Add to this the opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, horse-riding, and water sports; Normandy has it all.
Le Guislain is an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions that Normandy has to offer. Within 30 minutes drive are the amazing sandy beaches of the west coast, the busy towns of Coutances and St Lo, and the pretty market town of Villedieu-les-Poeles, the ancient center of the copper industry. Less than an hour away is the picturesque Mont St Michel and in the other direction the famous town of Bayeaux. The Normandy D-Day beaches can also be reached within the hour.
The area offers a wealth of local markets; Villedieu les Poêles has one of the largest markets where you will find a number of producers of local Norman produce: andouille (Norman speciality sausage) cream, butter, eggs, poultry, honey, seafood, fruit and vegetables, flowers, clothes, linen and gifts; Gavray has the exciting livestock market, and throughout July a weekly Norman market.
Within a few minutes drive are a number of local restaurants that serve good value lunchtime menus.

"Rural retreat between the coasts"
We had a wonderful time staying at this gite. It is set in peaceful Normandy countryside, surrounded by fields, set back from the road with a large garden - great for breakfast outside or evening sundowners. The owners, Anne and Dave, made us feel really welcome and made sure that we had everything that we needed. The living room was light and spacious, decorated tastefully with those touches that make you feel relaxed; good cooking area and barbecue. Bedrooms had plenty of storage space and very good beds - slept so well. Large bathroom with plenty of hot water. Great value for money. 10min drive is the village of Hambye, providing two boulangerie for crossants and baguettes, a boucherie and small supermarche. We enjoyed several trips to the D-day beaches with their fantastic museums, learning so much of interest. Then there is the Bayeux tapestry - wonderful account of another Norman invasion, but in the opposite direction; there are interesting parallels. In contrast the coast near Mont Saint Michel provided lovely walks, watching the harvesting of mussels (which provide an excellent lunch!) and sand yatching - you can have a go for a small charge. Both coasts are about an hour's drive. We will definitely be back!
