The Umbria region
Umbria, located in the heart of Italy, is one of the smallest and pleasant Italian tourist regions.
Umbria is characterized by rolling green hills and towns and settlements rich in history and traditions. The region was inhabited in prehistoric times by the Umbrians and the Etruscans, then was part of the Roman Empire. Later it was also included in the territory of the Papal States.
Romanic churches, Gothic cathedrals, basilicas and ancient buildings are still to witness the great artistic production that, from the twelfth to the sixteenth century, gave Umbria immortal masterpieces.
There are numerous events taking place, especially in summer in many towns in Umbria. These events, some well-known at international level, in the region attract tourists from around the world. The most famous folklore events are definitely the Corsa dei Ceri, which takes place every year in Gubbio (PG), the Quintana, source Foligno, which brings back the costumes of 1600, The Medieval festival of May Day in Assisi and the Ring Race of Narni.
Umbria has a rich variety of dishes and local products. Essential elements are the oil and the wine. Making a quick overview about other products and dishes, we can start from the bread "insipid" and various buns (the "torta al testo" of Perugia, the "crescia" of Gubbio, the "pizza under lu focu" of Terni) through the various dishes based on game (gnocchi with hare sauce, guinea fowl to "drip pan", "birds" spit, pappardelle with wild boar) and truffles.
The territory of the district of Gubbio is located in the north eastern part of Umbria, at border with Marche (east). Mainly mountainous area, bounded to the east by the Apennine Mountains and to the west by the Tiber valley, is rich in natural beauty and art treasures where history, culture and landscape coexist in a harmonic symbiosis. Next to the historic centers of extraordinary beauty and charm that retain excellent testimonies of medieval times, offers a nature with pristine environments and artistic handicrafts that testify to the mastery of a well-established secular abilities.
Among the craft activities historically established in Gubbio, ceramics, wood and wrought ironwork hold a particularly prominent position.
In Gubbio the art of eating well has a long tradition. The plain wholesome cuisine of Gubbio uses mainly typical local products: meat from mountain pastures, game, cheeses and charcuterie, several local varieties of salad, olive oil and fine wines from the hilly regions, various mineral waters from the Apennine chain (some with particularly therapeutic properties). White or black truffle are very common in the Gubbio area.
