The Cyclades region
Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades and mostly self sufficient with its agricultural history, has a stunning mountain range with beautiful unspoilt villages which are like splashes of white amongst the landscape and where the local people welcome visitors as they do their family. Sample their fabulous cuisine, local wine and enjoy the hospitality. It is like a time gone by.
Our beaches are boasted to be some of the best in Greece with endless miles of white sand and turquoise clear water, totally safe for swimming and at the south of the island some secluded bays that are virtually undiscovered.
The climate here is one of the best in the southern Mediterranean area with virtually uninterrupted sunshine from the middle of May till the middle of October, with temperatures averaging 30 degress celcius in the Summer. As we are an island, there is generally a breeze that keeps the climate manageable and our days are long and glorious.
The history of the island is varied with Byzantine, venetian and Greek infuences, all still greatly evident and there are many monuments and churches in evidence. The Kastro area of our town,Chora, the Venetian quarter is an incredible display of architecture, alleyways and a past era.
People have dwelt in Naxos since 4000 BC and on arrival to this beautiful island by boat, the first visual you see is The Portara, the doorway to the ancient Temple of Apollo, which was built circa 500 BC and never finished.
Rising above the main town of Chora is the Venetian Kastro, built in 1200 and the governing seat in the Cyclades for 300 years.
Within the perimeter of the castle there are a number of Venetian residences,a 13th Century Catholic Cathedral and the French School where Nikos Karantzakis, the renowned Greek writer, studied. Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ are among his most renowned works. The building is now an Archaeological museum displaying many examples of marble and ceramics.
The Bourgos area, where the Greeks lived when the town was under Venetian control is full of winding streets with many shops and restaurants to choose from.
Mouthwatering restaurants, intimate bars and ouzerias, fabulous shops and of course the port and delightful fishing harbor, with a marina for the larger boats. You can while away your day just watching!
The village of Glinado,a short distance from Chora, hosts a number of wonderful tavernas, all serving local produce, together with a bakery, mini market and even a small fashion(Greek!) shop.Delight in the arrival of the daily milk, carried by donkey and sip coffee or ouzo whilst you enjoy this peaceful time gone by and the welcoming locals.
Our local town hall, the Dymos, arrange Sunday walks through many parts of seemingly undiscovered terrain, between October and May and there are other companies that arrange specific walking holidays too.
Watersports facilities are available on a number of our beaches and Kite and Windsurfing is also a popular activity. Try snorkeling here too. It is so beautiful with the clear water and the underwater world!
Our beaches are reputed to be some of the most beautiful in the world, with clear, turquoise water, white sand and completely safe swimming.Agios Prokopios is only 6 km away and is quite stunning!
There is also a great riding school, suitable for all ages, taking a number of daily treks, even along some beaches. There is something majical about riding horseback along the white sand, with water lapping, just before sunset.
Cultural events abound throughout the year and to view current activities on the island go to www.inaxos.com.
An evening concert in the Kastro with beautiful Greek music and some local wine will be an experience never forgotten

"Relaxing Naxos holiday in large family house with great swimming pool."
It was an indulgence for just my wife and I to occupy this large villa but from the moment we were met from our ferry by Lesley with our hire car until we departed we enjoyed the relaxation that the villa offered. The villa is very much a family home with all the amenities and some of the signs of use that this implies. The villa is private with good views and a stunning pool. There are numerous shaded patio areas and a large garden. Wi-Fi also available. A car or other transport is needed to visit the coast and explore Naxos but there are tavernas within walking distance in the nearby friendly village. We found the villa to be comfortable and peaceful and we had a most enjoyable stay. Lesley was available whenever needed, was always friendly and always helpful. The villa would ideally suit large families and groups of friends as there is so much usable space both inside and out.
Very pleased to hear that you and your wife enjoyed your time in Naxos and all that this Glinado property had to offer. Thank you for taking the time to write the review and we would love to welcome you back! Kind regards ,Lesley. Property Manager

"Excellent villa - incredible gardens, views and facilities"
I spent a week at the Glinado Villa. The villa is in a great location - the historic old town of Naxos is an easy 5minutes drive away as is the nearest beach. You can wander up to the village which has a few shops/bakery and tavernas. The location is also fantastic for exploring the interior of the island and the many beautiful beaches Naxos has to offer. The property is large so you can always find some space to yourself but it still retains a homely feel. The main living room is great for getting everyone together. Its worth saying it is well air-conditioned... Greece is hot! The views are simply stunning... you can see the old town and over the sea to Paros. On a clear day we even saw Mykonos. The Villa is set in beautiful gardens with a large private pool. One of my favourite features is that the property has many balconies and terraces. This gives a great opportunity for outdoor dining (and drinking) while taking in the views and the gardens from every angle. I highly recommend a stay at the Glinado Villa.
