About Milos, Greece

An undiscovered Aegean gem, Milos is a part of the Cycladic chain of islands located about halfway between Athens and Crete. With an area of about 56 square miles, Milos is the fifth largest of Cyclades and has over 70 beaches, more than any other island.

Dating back to the Minoan civilisation of Crete when Milos supplied them with obsidian, mining has been a big industry on Milos and is perhaps one of the reasons why tourism has been slow to develop.

A statue of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite was discovered on Milos in 1820 and sold to the French Consul who then gave it to King Louis XVIII of France as a gift.

The King immediately put the statue on display in the Louvre museum in Paris where it is still available for the world to see. You probably know it as the Venus de Milo.

What to do in Milos

The best way to see the Milos is to take an around-the-island boat tour from the port of Adamos stopping at the white sandy beach of Sarakiniko. Here, majestic white pumice rock formations contrast with the deep cobalt blue of the sea.

Visit the hilltop town of Plaka, the island’s true capital, and wander the narrow streets through the whitewashed houses so typical of Greek islands.

Visit the 13th-century Venetian castle before heading down to the harbour for a traditional Greek Island meze lunch at a waterfront tavern.

Other sights worth seeing include the early Christian Catacombs near the village of Tripiti that were cut by hand into the porous volcanic rock.

Still the European Union’s largest producer of bentonight and perlite, a visit to the mining museum is a must as it explains the civilisations and invaders that have mined the island’s riches for millennia.

Top travel tips for Milos

The best time of year to visit Milos is during the summer from the second week in May until the middle of October. Try to avoid visiting during the summer school holiday and especially in August when the Greeks take their holidays. This can mean more crowds.

You have several ways of getting to Milos that include a daily flight from Athens or by ferry or hydrofoil from the Port of Piraeus. Combine your stay on Milos with visits to some of the other islands, with Sifnos just an hour away and Santorini two hours by hydrofoil.
