Milos holidays

If you are looking for a secret Greek island getaway that has escaped the crowds found on Santorini and Mykonos, then Milos is for you. Authentic in every way, Milos is how the Greek Islands were before tourism. For accommodation on Milos, look no further than Holiday Lettings where they have dozens of rental properties available.

About Milos, Greece

An undiscovered Aegean gem, Milos is a part of the Cycladic chain of islands located about halfway between Athens and Crete. With an area of about 56 square miles, Milos is the fifth largest of Cyclades and has over 70 beaches, more than any other island.

Dating back to the Minoan civilisation of Crete when Milos supplied them with obsidian, mining has been a big industry on Milos and is perhaps one of the reasons why tourism has been slow to develop.

A statue of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite was discovered on Milos in 1820 and sold to the French Consul who then gave it to King Louis XVIII of France as a gift.

The King immediately put the statue on display in the Louvre museum in Paris where it is still available for the world to see. You probably know it as the Venus de Milo.

What to do in Milos

The best way to see the Milos is to take an around-the-island boat tour from the port of Adamos stopping at the white sandy beach of Sarakiniko. Here, majestic white pumice rock formations contrast with the deep cobalt blue of the sea.

Visit the hilltop town of Plaka, the island’s true capital, and wander the narrow streets through the whitewashed houses so typical of Greek islands.

Visit the 13th-century Venetian castle before heading down to the harbour for a traditional Greek Island meze lunch at a waterfront tavern.

Other sights worth seeing include the early Christian Catacombs near the village of Tripiti that were cut by hand into the porous volcanic rock.

Still the European Union’s largest producer of bentonight and perlite, a visit to the mining museum is a must as it explains the civilisations and invaders that have mined the island’s riches for millennia.

Top travel tips for Milos

The best time of year to visit Milos is during the summer from the second week in May until the middle of October. Try to avoid visiting during the summer school holiday and especially in August when the Greeks take their holidays. This can mean more crowds.

You have several ways of getting to Milos that include a daily flight from Athens or by ferry or hydrofoil from the Port of Piraeus. Combine your stay on Milos with visits to some of the other islands, with Sifnos just an hour away and Santorini two hours by hydrofoil.

A Greek Island summer holiday is just about as good as it gets. And while Milos may be a little on the quiet side, for some it may just be what the doctor ordered. From a simple beachside apartment to a villa with a pool, Holiday Lettings has just the accommodation you are looking for. Start searching for your perfect holiday rental, today!

Aloni Cave House - Sea View
A paradise on earth

Unforgettable holidays in a beautiful ambient house. The "Aloni" is the perfect place for a group of friends that want to have fun without being disturbed and without disturbing anyone. We were able to gather sometimes inside the house in the so special "katoga" and other times in the backyard or in the outdoors sitting area "aloni" which was ideal for groups of friends. Party till dawn, without anyone telling us to be quiet! We were not only satisfied, but thrilled with everything. We wish we could have stayed more. If, however, you have no means of transportation, you may find moving around difficult.see more
Drougas' Windmill /Drouga Maria
Three wonderful days in a wonderful place.

We had a great stay at the windmill. Everything was very clean and furnished with great attention to detail. The kitchen was fully equipped and cold soft drinks and beer were provided when we arrived. The very friendly homeowners asked us to call them with problems and questions at any time. The breakfast at the old windmill table outside with a great view of the sea has been wonderful. It is very quiet and peaceful at night and we had the good fortune to enjoy the sea view at full moon. A perfect stay for us.see more
