Villa Mondello is a stone construction, with frescoed interns and has been recently restored, having in total 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. It is in the Tuscan countryside a few km from Florence and Arezzo, as well as the countless sites closer by, and is thus apt for those preferring holidays centred around art and culture.

Villa Mondello is also perfect for relaxing vacations, being in a safe and quiet place, with no acoustic pollution, with even the pool being built apart from the house, so as to ensure no noise can disturb. It's so beautiful stay here!

The house was built more than 100 years ago.

It was built by two Englishmen. Borgo All Collina was a popular resort in Tuscany, visited by many English people who loved the valley and felt it to be more beautiful and authentic than other areas of Tuscany.

Then came the war years and in 1922 Villa Mondello was bought out of love by the Mondello family, after whom the house was obviously named.

It was bought out of love because the Mr. Mondello, a ship-owner by profession, had a great passion for poetry, defining himself an “amateur poet”, and often came to visit the grave of Cristoforo Landino, a great humanist and commentator of Dante's Comedy.

He brought his Sicilian taste to the villa, rich and colourful. He ordered that every room be painted a different colour - the image of each to reflect the literature he knew so well.

The Tuscany region

Arezzo was an Etruscan city, but some archaeological findings suggest that maybe the first tourists visited those areas in prehistoric times! A city of considerable prestige, it was conquered and became an important Roman garrison. We suggest that you go and see the beautiful Roman amphitheatre located just a short walk from the station.Walking around the historic centre you will see that even the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are very apparent in the palaces, churches and art in general. The city is small and you can easily explore it on foot. You can see the works of Piero Della Francesca, Giorgio Vasari, Giotto and the Della Robbia family of pottery artists. An important literary personality is Petrarch, whose house you can visit in the vicinity of the cathedral. In music, Guido Monaco, the inventor of musical notes lived there and his statue dominates one of the main city squares. Arezzo is also – the homeland of Oscarl Prize winner Roberto Benigni. You can reach the town by car, driving for about 45 km, or by train: the nearest train station is in Porrena (2 km). visit our website www.tuscanyvillatoscanamondello.com

Castel San Niccolo

As it stands prominently on the hill top at Borgo alla Collina, Villa Mondello enjoys extensive and expansive views in every direction.

This small village has origins at least from the middle ages and probably much earlier, has experienced a glorious history - and a tragic one, for it was extensively bombed during the first world war.

The village was a fiefdom under the Guidi Counts and was annexed as part of Florence. The nearby castle was presented as a gift to Cristoforo Landino by the city of Florence in recognition of his humanitarian work and his appreciation and support to the divine comedy.

"Far more than we imagined, much more than we hoped for"

I and my family stayed at Villa Mondello in the autumn of 2012 and we cannot rave enough about the place. Comfort, convenience, elegance and above all that indefinable Italian sense of style which was evident throughout the property. The villa is convenient for Florence, Arezzo and the beautiful Casentino Valley - just 7 or 8 minutes by car to the hill town of Poppi, one of the best examples of its type in the whole of Italy - we loved to wander the historic streets and explore the ancient castle. From the moment we arrived to the day we left we felt utterly protected and superbly well cared for by Francesca and her team of helpers. She welcomed us with a ‘merenda’ an Italian afternoon meal and gave excellent information about the villa, its surroundings and Tuscany in general. Throughout our two week stay, she was always on-hand but never intrusive and her command of English was excellent - always delivered in that particularly charming Italian way. The place is large and the beautifully kept gardens are extensive and everywhere one rests there is a view to enjoy. We were a party of 9 and had plenty of space and of course with all those bathrooms we had no morning rush and queue. One of our party had difficulty with stairs and was fortunate to find a good double room on the ground floor but was somewhat disappointed not to have a choice - there was no lift. The general areas, in particular the kitchen were excellent - plenty of places to sit and relax and a good kitchen for cooking Italian meals. On one of the nights Francesca and her family entertained us with a wonderful Italian meal and we were proud to return the hospitality with Yorkshire cooking - we hope they enjoyed our roast beef. The pool area is certainly something out of a magazine. Impeccably finished, immaculate and a good length for a swim. I was pleased to see a counter current device as I particularly enjoy competitive swimming. The pool house had a small kitchen, fridge, changing space and shelter from the sun. All the garden furniture was to the highest quality - we learned it was made by the family company - they work in ‘high end’ projects in wood. Following advice, we made two separate day visits to Florence, driving almost all the way there and then parking at a very reasonable cost in an ‘out of town’ park and ride. The city was a fabulous experience. A particular favourite was nearby Poppi - we went there so many times and enjoyed aperitifs under the castle walls - a great restaurant nearby - Antica Cantina was the name we think. Francesca, we cannot praise you enough and have every confidence in recommending this property to anyone. We have already tentatively reserved two week for next season. A superb holiday in every way - six stars please.
