Location description from owner

The Midi-Pyrénées region

Carennac is a commune in the Lot, Southwestern France which belongs to the historical region of Quercy. It is designated one of the most beautiful villages (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France) approximately 30 kilometres east of Souillac and 22km from Rocamadour.

This marvelously picturesque village is situated on the banks of the Dordogne River.

The town existed as early as the 10th century, although its history dates back to Neolithic times. The ancient village fortifications can still be seen today. In the 11th Century it was given to the abbey of Cluny which founded a priory there. Badly damaged during the hundred years war, the buildings were restored in the 15th Century, but further devastated during the religious wars. The 11th Century church of St Peter, nestling by the fortifications of the monastery, retains a number of features from the Middle Ages including a remarkable Romanesque tympanum. Along with the church there is a medieval priory, and cloister that features a 15th century mise au tombeau, and a 16th century castle.

The 'fairy-tale' houses of Carennac are built of the local white-yellow stone. Most have been lovingly restored, some feature interesting and ornate windows while others have simply beautiful wooden balconies. The very pretty Tour Genevive located near the river is yet another of the delightful architectural attractions in Carenna

Carennac

The surroundings of the village are of equal picturesque charm: the Dordogne's quick waters attract canoe enthusiasts in droves, the valley's corn fields, walnut groves and ancient villages make for a perfect setting for outdoor activities, such as camping, riding and trekking. Le Causse plateau is strewn with chasms and caves at La Cave and Presque and Gouffre de Padirac. The summer months are notably warm and dry, temperatures averaging 30°.

Further on, Sarlat-la-Canéda, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Cahors and Aurillac are regional hubs. The A20 motorway (linking Paris to Toulouse and Spain) lies 30 km (19 mi) away from Carennac. The closest railway station is 4 km (2.5 mi) away, in Bétaille.

“Lovely house in beautiful historic village”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2016

Lovely house, lots of thoughtful touches down to shopping bags and hats to borrow. House has a garage but the house is on a narrow lane and was difficult to get into so we parked a few minutes walk away on the main road.Carrenac is a beautiful village and a lovely place to visit. Peaceful especially first thing.

“Fabulous House and Lovely Village”

Reviewed 22 Apr 2014

We stayed here in early June 2013 and loved staying here. The weather wasn't the best but we found plenty of things to do around the area and in the house. Caves, beautiful villages to visit and in the evenings we dined in the local restaurants which were very lovely. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
