The Hebrides region

The Isle of Skye is one of Scotland's most famous and popular tourist destinations.

It is an island of rugged beauty, with the Cuillin mountains dominating the skyline. Around every corner you are met by yet another stunning and breathtaking view, be it the mountains, the coastline, moorland, waterfalls or sunsets.

The island and its surrounding waters is a haven for wildlife - golden eagles and the re-introduced white tailed eagle do really well here, otters make regular appearances and whales and dolphins can be seen in the sea around the island.

Skye is vast, varied and magnificent and in a week or two you will barely scratch the surface of all the things to see and do, which is why people keep coming back time and time again.

Carbost

The picturesque crofting community of Portnalong lies in the Minginish peninsula to the west of Skye. It is only 3 miles north of Carbost where Skye's only Whisky Distillery is located and half an hour's drive from Portree making it a perfect base to explore the island. The communities of Portnalong, Fiskavaig and Fernilea are scattered along the coastline of Loch Harport, Skye's most sheltered loch and and offer stunning views of the Cuillin mountains, Macleod's Tables and Loch Bracadale.

Portnalong itself was founded by Crofters from Lewis, Harris and Scalpay who were resettled by the Department of Agriculture in the early 20th Century, bringing with them their weaving skills.

Portnalong attracts many hill climbers and walkers due to its proximity to the Cuillin mountains but it is also perfect for getting to Talisker Bay and Glenbrittle Beach. For those interested in water activities, there is a pier and slipway at Portnalong, so ideal for launching a boat to go fishing, diving, sailing or kayaking.
