The Umbria region
UMBRIA IS THE GREEN HEART OF ITALY
Umbria is a region with few rivals in its capacity to surprise, delight and capture the heart of the travellers. It is never easy to explain the reasons of the "heart" so well known by the many foreign travellers who over the centuries have dreamed of settling in Umbria, as well as by the many who live there today, fully appreciating the special quality of life in the Umbrian towns and countryside.
The region offers so many peaceful spots to be discovered, natural environments still unspoiled by man, far from the traffic, noise and industries of the modern metropolis. Here it is still possible to live in close contact with nature, enjoying the beauty of a land rich in history, memories and centuries-old traditions.
In this area you will be surprised by many environments, a gentle and harmonious succession of landscapes and natural settings. Once inside the region, everything is so close that it is only a brief jaunt to get from the luminous Lake Trasimeno area to the rugged and wooded landscapes around Gubbio; from the serene olive groves of the Umbran Valley or Vale of Spoleto, to the spectacular high plains of Castelluccio and Norcia; from the luxuriantly green Valnerina dotted with towers and castles to the Sibilline mountains, rich in myths and legend, and then descending towards the gentle hills of the Amerino area and tormented guilles gourged into the volcanic soil of Orvieto.
Bevagna is a splendid medieval town, full of interesting and beautiful sights: Roman mosaics, the Roman theatre and temple, and many beautiful churches and monuments. Bevagna is rich in culture, traditions, events and good restaurants. It is known for the specialties of Umbrian cuisine (e.g. truffle-based dishes), its genuine olive oil, and its excellent wines, including Sagrantino DOCG. Unusually for Umbria, Bevagna is not a hilltown, but is quite flat, sitting in a shallow basin at the foot of the northern end of the mountainous backbone of Umbria; at the end of a long day of touring it's nice to come home to a place where you don't have to fight sharp inclines on your after-dinner walk.
Bevagna is also famous for DOC and DOCG wines like the lovely Sagrantino DOCG and DOP extra virgin oils. Many wineries and oil mills, where is possible to directly purchase the products, are operating in the area of Bevagna.
Main sights in Bevagna: Palazzo dei Consoli, known from 1187, with Teatro F. Torti (1886), Romanesque church of S. Michele Arcangelo (12th-13th centuries) Romanesque church of S. Silvestro (1195), Church of Sant'Agostino (1316), Church of San Nicolò, Church of Santa Maria in Laurenzia, built in the 13th century and later enlarged, Church of San Vincenzo (known from the 12th century), The medieval walls, Ruins of a Roman Temple, Ruins of a Roman Theater, Roman Therme with mosaics of marine life.
