To soak up the Tuscany sunshine and gaze on the iconic scenery, the terraced garden at Casa Leana is sheer bliss. On the first terrace children can play on a lawn area while parents watch on from the paved dining patio with a pergola for shade, then on the second terrace there’s a small olive grove and a romantic bench for two, to admire the views in the shade of a gnarly oak.

A heated swimming pool on terrace three, safely fenced and sheltered by the landscaped borders, with loungers for grown ups, pool toys for the children, plus a dining table and barbecue in the shade of a pergola. The fourth terrace is the vegetable garden which guests are welcome to raid and children will especially love plucking and popping in the sun ripened tomatoes and super sweet strawberries. The fifth terrace is set up for outdoor fun with a sand pit, swings and a slide in a play area plus space for badminton, skittles, boules and Nerf gun battles. And for the less energetic, there are two hammocks overlooking the vineyard.

Casa Leana was built way back in 1650 as a big rambling farmhouse, set out over three floors, with the main entrance up an external stone staircase to the first floor, which is the traditional way in Tuscany. Today the villa provides plenty of space for 10+ family and friends, plus two babies, with 5 bedrooms, 3 lounges, 3 bath/shower-rooms, a huge dining kitchen, a play room and games room. All 5 bedrooms have space for a cot and two travel cots are available.

The lower floor comprises the games room, library ‘snug’, wine cellar and one of the bedrooms. The large games room, with a beamed ceiling and funky pop artwork on the stone walls, has table tennis, table football, a pool table and a PS2 console with games. The cosy library has over 350 books on the shelves, a leather corner sofa to curl up in and a writing desk to set up a laptop and log into the Wi Fi. The double bedroom, with a wrought iron bed, has an ensuite shower with a washbasin and WC. The vaulted wine cellar has a superb selection of wines from Tuscany and around the world that are available for guests to buy.

The first floor comprises the large kitchen dining room, a separate breakfast room, a king-size bedroom and the a family bathroom. With home-cooking so central to Tuscany family life, the traditional farmhouse kitchen is the heart of the house, with a big open fireplace, a magnificent dining table for 10 (plus 2 high chairs are available) and beautiful tiled work surfaces. A large fridge freezer, drinks fridge and a microwave is in the separate pantry and a utility room has a washing machine, dishwasher, iron and ironing board plus hairdryer, torch and first aid kit. The kitchen opens onto a pretty, covered patio with a dining table that seats 10 and a barbecue. A breakfast room doubles as a small lounge with a bistro table that seats 4, a chaise longue, log fire, chess and other board games. The bedroom on the first floor has a king-size wrought iron four poster bed and a balcony with seating for 6 and there is also a shower room with a washbasin, bidet and WC.

The top floor of Casa Leana comprises the main lounge, three bedrooms and the family bathroom. The lounge is very large and comfortable, with a big, squashy L-shaped sofa, a single sofa bed, coffee table, flat screen TV with Sky+ and Sky Sports, a DVD player with 600 DVD’s to choose from and Wi Fi. Two of the bedrooms have king size wrought iron beds and one of these has an additional single bed. The other bedroom has twin single wrought iron beds. The family bathroom has a bath, shower, washbasin, bidet and WC.

Casa Leana stands in approximately three quarters of an acre of terraced gardens with stunning views. The gardens include lawns and play areas, a heated swimming pool, outdoor dining and a vegetable patch with tomatoes, strawberries, courgettes, plums and apples for guests to pick.

Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Casa Leana is located in unspoilt Tuscany countryside of the Arezzo Province, not very far from the border with Umbria. The nearest village to Casa Leana is medieval Anghiari (3 miles) which is hailed as one of ‘the most beautiful villages in Italy’, with spectacular views over the Tiber Valley. Enclosed within ancient walls, the maze of narrow streets are a delight to stroll around, browsing antique shops, stopping for cappuccinos and gelati in the cafes and choosing one of the many trattorias to enjoy traditional Tuscan cuisine. Anghiari also has a couple of small supermarkets for essentials and groceries, plus there are bigger supermarkets and many more shops in Arezzo and Citta di Castello (20 mins).

One of the greatest pleasures in Tuscany is exploring the countryside on bikes and nine are available for guests to borrow, free of charge, at Casa Leana. There are 6 adult bikes, sized from small to large, and 3 children’s bikes including one with stabilisers and one with a child seat. Helmets and padlocks are also provided. Within 3 miles of the villa, families can pootle through vineyards and fields of sunflowers, stop for a break in parks with play area and visit a local petting farm. Children can also swap pedal power for horsepower at a nearby riding stables (7 miles).

Besides just chilling out at Casa Leana, families can pack a picnic for a day on the sandy shores of Lake Trasimeno (1 hr 15) to paddle in the calm, fresh water or hire a pedalo. There are three beaches to discover close to the historic walled town of Castiglione del Lago and many flock here simply to indulge in long leisurely lunches in fine lakeside restaurants.

Hopping from Tuscany into the Umbria, Perugia, the capital, is approximately an hour’s drive and well worth a trip to explore the medieval walled town of piazzas and palazzos, but also discover the buzzy vibe of a lively university city. The international Jazz festival in July is one of the world’s most prestigious and Perugia is also home to Perugina Baci chocolates, with Willy Wonka-esque tours and tastings to tempt chocoholics of all ages.

Nearest medical services: GP in Anghiari (3 miles); A&E in Sansepolcro (7 miles) and regional hospital in Arezzo (20 miles).

Getting here: The closest airport to Casa Leana is Perugia (46 miles) and Ryanair offer flights from Stansted. BA and FlyBe offer flights to Florence (67 miles) and flights are also available with other airlines to Bologna (109 miles), Pisa (128 miles) and Rome (164 miles).

Anghiari is our local town which is about a 5 minute drive from Casa Leana. Many festivals are held there throughout the year (details at the house). The panoramic view from Anghiari is truly spectacular, made all the more so by the long, straight road running across the flat floor of the Upper Tiber valley from Sansepolcro and up the steep hill to the town. The view towards Anghiari is equally splendid, with the city walls rising up from a steep spur above the Tiber and the Sovara valleys. Anghiari is rated one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Citerna is the nearest hamlet to ours and houses a grocers shop and three or four fabulous restaurants together with a few other jewellery and knick knack shops. It is high on a hill with wonderful views of the valley. Again, festivals take place throughout the year (details at the house).Arezzo is our nearest major town and is about 20 minutes drive from the house. It is set on a steep hill rising from the floodplain of the Arno - it has many fabulous boutiques and restaurants. There is an excellent market held there on the first Sunday of the month which is said to be the best in Tuscany and many other activities take place throughout the year (details at the house). Siena is also nearby where the Palio di Siena is held - a famous horse race which is held annually in the middle of town. The Mille Miglia which is a famous classic car race usually runs through one of our nearby villages and is an exciting event to watch. These are just examples of the countless festivals and events that take place in the area throughout the season - a list of which you will find at the house. A visit to Florence is another wonderful day out either by train from Arezzo (about 30 minutes) or by car from the house which takes just under an hour. You can take a fast train from Arezzo to Rome (about 1 hour ten minutes journey) where you can spend a day sight seeing.

“Utterly Fabulous!”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2015

Casa Leana is just amazing! The house is beautifully furnished and styled in a typically Tuscan style but with every modern convenience you could want and with additions that we didn't even know we wanted before we arrived .... Wine cellar and library, for instance. The garden and pool are lovely and attended to every day before you awake by the hosts Di and Leigh who could not do enough for us. I would recommend a car , but the house is only 5 mins from nearest town.

“An absolute joy x”

This was our third visit to casaleana and what a treat ... It is a lovely tradional Tuscan villa and has everything you could wish for.. A fabulous pool looking over the Tuscan hills..great kitchen and living room.. With plenty of DVDs for relaxing .. A great games room and bikes for a little touring ...I'd advise to use the outside eating areas as much as you can , it's lovely ... Leigh and Di are great hosts and make your stay one to remember ... There are lots of lovely places to visit close by... Xx

“Wonderfully authentic Tuscany experience”

Reviewed 18 May 2015

This was the first time I had been to Tuscany and it more than exceeded my expectations. The property was delightful as were the owners, Di and Leigh, who carefully explained eveything we needed to know about the house when we arrived. We were a small group so the house was much bigger than we actually needed but I can't imagine it being crowded even if fully occupied. The property is a wonderful blend of superb original features and yet with all the modern conveniences and facilities you could imagine. Free wifi was available most of the time but with so much to see and do we rarely used it. The garden is a stunning feature of the property and we spent many happy hours by (or in) the pool or playing lawn games. All of the features of the property have been more than adequately described by previous reviewers. I would not disagree with the over-riding sentiment that this is a delightful property in a tiny hamlet ideally situated to explore the region. The nearest town, Anghiari, is simply delightful and we were pleasantly surprised that eating out was not expensive as we imagined it would be and generally shopping was also not pricey compared to other holiday destinations (or even to home!) We are very pleased that we chose Casaleana for our early summer break and have already recommended it to many of our friends as the ideal Tuscan getaway destination.

“Stunning Villa”

Reviewed 3 Mar 2015

A beautiful villa owned by a very lovely and helpful couple. We had a great time and will definitely be returning! It was a perfect location for a relaxing break. We also enjoyed trying all the different pizza restaurants in the village nearby and a trip to a nearby vineyard.

“Fantastic Holiday Villa”

Reviewed 21 Oct 2014

What can I say about Casa Leana and Tuscany? Well it was just one of the best holidays ever! Starting with the friendly service from Di and Leigh who both met us in Anghiari and took us to the villa so that we didn't get lost. What a great couple who obviously take great pride in looking after their guests - from the breakfast hamper to all the useful information that they provide about the area. Great parking tips! The villa itself was just perfect to house our family of 5 plus our chocolate labrador - loads of space for the kids to loose themselves in. They couldn't decide whether to swim in the pool (which was amazing in October), have a table tennis or pool tournament or watch one of the many DVD's they hadn't seen. On top of that they then started a family chess tournament having never played it before! I, of course, lost that! The villa has lots of touches and I felt completely at home as soon as I stepped through the front door! Fantastic kitchen, extremely comfortable beds and a wine selection to die for! The garden was spectacular and we changed our morning cup of tea spot each day to appreciate it all. The location was ideal and we managed to visit Florence and Siena both of which I'd strongly recommend. Breathtaking! Anghiari itself is lovely and has pizza/pasta restaurants and an ice-cream cafe that I will really miss. I can't praise this package enough and I will definitely be telling all my friends it's worth a visit. Look forward to returning soon!

“Best holiday ever!”

Reviewed 25 Sep 2014

Several reasons why this was literally the best holiday ever. * The most fantastic friendly service from the owners Di and Leigh who couldn't do enough for us * The most stunning location - the sort that every time you look up from your book by the pool you need to pinch yourself * A house full of character and charm * A fully stocked wine cellar of hand picked wines by Leigh who REALLY knows his wines * The option to have the lovely next door neighbour pop round and cook you a fantastic traditional italian meal * A truly breathtakingly beautiful hilltop village down the road (Anghiari). * And I got proposed to by the pool over looking some of the most beautiful views I have seen. Now you can't beat that! Lovely couple and lovely place.

“Simply perfect for an extended family get away!”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2014

We knew we were in good hands from the minute Leigh collected us from Perugia airport. A short 45 minute trip and we joined the rest of our extended family at Casa Leana. Yes I am slightly biased, I love all things Italian and all things with a bit of history and I fell in love with this beautiful villa at first sight. Every room is tastefully decorated, with the comfort of guests clearly in mind and the HUGE kitchen and 'al fresco' patio offer the perfect space for everybody to come together. We all had great fun in the games room too. The weather was kind to us so we were able to spend hours at the pool, playing badminton and enjoying barbecues, all while enjoying the most fabulous Tuscan scenery anyone could wish for. All this AND it's just short train ride from Florence, Rome and Venice - who could ask for more? We'll be back next year without a doubt.

“The perfect location for a relaxing Tuscan retreat, a real home away from home!”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2014

If you're looking for a relaxing holiday, in an authentic and beautifully restored Italian farm-house, nestled into the Tuscan hillside, with access to some of Italy's most beautiful & bustling cities...then Casa Leana is THE place for you!! We had the most wonderful family holiday and can't wait to go back every year!! It really is a special home with something for everyone - from the lovely open-plan kitchen that made dinner time a real family affair, the picturesque views that we woke up to every morning, the chill-time we had around the pool (under the Tuscan sun), a bit of family competitiveness in the games our little adventures to Siena & Florence, not to mention all the lovely little hilltop villages right on your doorstep! The owners are super friendly & helpful....and have done an amazing job kitting the house (and garden) out with everything you need (including wifi - if you still need access to the 'outside' world).

“Exceptional - Can't wait to go back.”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2013

We stayed at CasaLeana with friends in July. This was the first time we had been to this area of Italy; what a remarkable first impression. The house is beautiful and well set up, though the pool, gardens and badminton net had us spend most of our time outdoors. It is close enough to amenities to be convenient without losing the feel of a country holiday. The owners were very helpful and had great tips when we decided we should actually explore a bit... It's hard not to want to keep this place a secret. It was fabulous.

“Absolute Bliss”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2013

We spent an amazing week at Casa Leana with our 5 month old daughter and a group of friends. The house is beautifully decorated and equipped with everything you could need - ranging from a vast number of cookbooks in the kitchen, a floor to ceiling DVD collection and even a stationary drawer with Sellotape! The terrace attached to the kitchen made for fabulous al fresco dining. The gardens were enormous, full of flowers and fresh herbs with a large decked area and pool. The impressively stocked wine cellar with tasting notes highlights how the owners have really gone the extra mile with every detail. Di and Leigh were incredibly helpful and approachable and will even stock up the fridge for your arrival for a minimal charge. Combine this with an idyllic view and an unspoilt part of rural Italy and you have something truly exceptional. Our only regret is booking one week and not two. We will be going back!
