“A great place for a getaway!!” A great place for groups as there are lots of sleeping areas. Spent many a morning and evening up on the terrace having breakfast and drinking the local sparkling wine Blanquete. Lots of room for all our stuff and the town is quite small so if you stay there for a few days you will definitely get to know some of the locals. Will be going back again myself next summer as it is a good jumping off point for a lot of places to visit in the south of France.
“An excellent location for exploring the Aude and Pyrenees Orientales” The cottage at 11 Rampe du Chateau proved an excellent base from which to enjoy the charms of the Aude valley and the Pyrenees Orientales. We arrived on the Saturday and instantly loved this charming 15 century property which has been lovingly restored and is situated in a prominent position under the Château du Quillan.
We woke every morning to the sound of the Aude, and sat each morning on the rooftop terrace enjoying morning coffee, overlooking la Place de lar Republique and the old bridge across the river and watching the locals come and go with fresh bread and groceries. Quillan sits in the shadow of the foothills of the Pyrenees, and the impressive peaks dominate the views from the terrace.
The property is ideally situated close to centres for rafting and canoeing. There are opportunities for off and on road cycling and we enjoyed our walk up the Sentier Cathare which ascends from Quillan at the top of the Rampe du Chateau! Watching the sunset from Rennes-le-Chateau is to be recommended, we struck out to Prades for an excellent day on the Petit Train Jaune and enjoyed a morning at the market in Mirapoix as well as spending a day in Carcassonne.
The property has a small but fully equipped kitchen area, also overlooking the square, and we enjoyed the local produce as well as eating out. The property has two bathrooms and a wonderful mazey feel to it's layout. We slept soundly in our comfortable bed, and I have to confess to scrimping a couple of wonderful windfall mirabelle plums from a tree overhanging the Rampe above the cottage!
I'd gladly return to this property and the charms of the upper Aude vallley! Highly recommended!
