“Great location, perfect host and ideal accomodation” Our stay at Le Chene was a delight from beginning to end. We arrived quite late in the evening to find that Hal, the owner, had been called away. However, he had left a charming note together with all the ingredients necessary to make ourselves a light supper for us and our two kids. A bottle of local wine, fresh bread and tomatoes and a round of camembert helped round off our arrival.
We met Hal properly the next day and his two dogs Milo and Mathilda (more later...). He was the perfect host, and for a novice gite owner made a great effort to think of some of the most helpful things such as providing olive oil and basic seasonings in the kitchen, plenty of cleaning materials and toilet rolls.
The gite was very clean and comfortable with all necessary equipment, and though by a long way not the most outdated place we have ever stayed in, we know Hal has some ambitious plans to modernise them for the 21st century which will make them top grade. The swimming pool was a delight too.
The dogs! Milo and Mathilda are two beautiful English Bull Terriers. Milo is Mathilda's pup. If you don't know this breed then the best advice I can give is be forceful with them and don't shy away. They are very sociable dogs, love people, and enjoy meeting new frineds. But Milo in particular is very boisterous and especially strong though he has a wonderful, playful nature (as do English Bulls in general). Be firm with him, push him away if you don't want him sitting on your feet, and enjoy his company on the walks in the woods around Le Chene. I swear you'll be a convert by the time the holiday is over - all my family were comepletely besoted with him by the time we were leaving.
The area around the gite is terrific for walks in the woods and the vineyards (accompanied by the dogs) while it is within 10 mins drive of wonderful Limeaux - home of Blanquette de Limoux, a wonderful sparkling wine to rival Champagne.
