This is the second year in succession that we have stayed for an extended period at The Ria Sirach Apartments, staying for at least 6 weeks each time. We have stayed in both of the upstairs apartments, last year in the 2 bedroomed Ria Apartment and this year in the one bedroomed Sirach Apartment. This review is equally applicable to both apartments.
As the title states, this really does feel like our second home! The apartments have been tastefully restored in a fantastic old building with enormous history, being a former engineer's residence and part of the Ria Sirach Hydroelectric. As with all old buildings maintenance is on-going, but if anything goes wrong in the apartment, Patrick, the property owner, is always prompt and ready to repair anything - proved by our toilet cistern.
The apartments are well furnished, comfortable and extremely well equipped. The kitchen provides plenty of space, storage and cooking facilities to accomodate us for a 6 week stay.
A large flat screen TV in the lounge has both UK satelite channels and French TV and there are plenty of DVD's/videos available from the downstairs games room. We spent many an evening curled up on the sofa in front of the TV with the log burner lit - not something we ever get the opportunity to do at home.
From the bedroom(s), at the back of the building furthest from the road, the views across the village and down the valley are stunning. With nothing but the sound of the river running by below, a comfortable, peaceful night's sleep is almost guaranteed.
As I have stated we have stayed here in the winter enjoying local walking and skiing and returning at the end of the day to light the log burner, which provides enough heat to warm the entire apartment, including the bathroom and bedrooms. There are also electric heaters if you need them. Since our first stay double glazing has been installed adding to the warmth but also virtually excluding any road noise.
Finally, a special mention for Patrick and his wife, Catherine, genuine hosts. From first booking to arriving, staying and eventually departing, nothing is too much trouble, always with time for a chat, to compare new places to visit or share a cup of tea sitting out in the sunshine. We hope to return next winter. …
Location great for walking
This is the second time we have stayed here. The location is great for anyone who is into walking (or skiing in the winter months)
The apartment is well appointed with all you need for a comfortable stay. The lounge, dining area and kitchen have everything you need. There are 2 good size bedrooms and a bathroom with seperate bath and shower.
The location is about 30 minutes from Perpignan, so access to the city for shopping or going to a rugby (League or Union) match is fine.
We arranged a 4x4 from Villefranche de Confluent to the refuge on Canogou so we can walk up to the top of Canigou. Recomended.
The Lac du Boullouse is about 1 hour away but has lots of walks around some stunning lakes and mountains.. Perhaps we will get up Mt Carlit next year.
Mont Louis has a small display of a Solar Furnace (Four Solaire) which is very interesting but Odeilo has a much larger Solar furnace you can visit .
We also went to the Catalan fortification of Perypertuse. Fantastic ruin high on a cliff.
Just a note: If you are walking check your insurance as it may not cover you over 2000m and lots of the walks are over this height. …
We had a fantastic couple of weeks in Prades with our two children (7 and 4). It’s an attractive and friendly town and the surrounding area is stunning. The mountains and gorges are amazing, and the reservoir about 5 miles away at Vinca has a great beach and is an ideal place for safe swimming for children. The local swimming pools in Prades and up the Road at Vernet le Bains are also fantastic for kids and adults.
The house itself is comfortable, spacious, beautifully decorated and very well equipped – the kitchen for example has everything you need to cook properly and goes far beyond what you’d expect in a holiday home. The best bit is the roof terrace – the views of the mountain are amazing and sitting on the roof with a glass of Rose at the end of the day was great!
Would thoroughly recommend and we will definitely be back. …
Really comfortable home from home apartment.
The apartment is really comfortable with lovely big rooms & fabolous views from the windows/ balcony. The facilities in the apartment were great & everything you need is on hand including satellite TV. The apartment is very secure especially for young children , with your own sepatate access to it. The parking is off the main road and so is fairly secure again for children. Chantal & Patrick are extremely helpful & even delivered fruit/ pastries whilst we stayed there. The area is lovely & the local lake at Vinca was a real bonus as its only 10mins away by car and has beach/ snack bar there. Villefranche (5mins) is a must see and Carcassonne / Coillure were well worth a visit. Thanks! …
A beautiful house with character, charm and spectacular views
I stayed in Rodes with my boys age 9 and 11 for just under two weeks. The house is wonderful, ample space for the three of us and finished to a high specification with love and attention. Looking out towards the Canigou Massif was captivating as was the village itself. We were very lucky to be in residence when the village fete took place - a 3 or four day affair with music and dancing in the village square late into the night - wonderfully unexpected. The location was perfect, I was looking for somewhere with beautiful scenery, away from other tourists and close enough to the sea to be able to drive there in the afternoons, Rodes and the accommodation lived up to this and surpassed it. It is easy to get to from the airport too, a very direct route taking no more than 30 minutes. About five minutes in the car takes you to Vinca where there is a lake for swimming, all other amenities are within very easy reach. Local produce is widely available and super - we arrive in peach season! Overall we enjoyed a lovely holiday and left feeling quite enchanted and longing to return. The house comes with the highest recommendation. …
