The Lazio region
Lazio has a great artistic and cultural heritage, which together with the landscape heritage of this region is one of the tourist attraction for international tourism. Besides the capital, Rome, there is the Vatican City, which attracts many religious from all over the world.
Also worth visiting are the beautiful archaeological sites of Tarquinia and Cerveteri.
Among the seaside resorts include Gaeta, Anzio, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo, between the famous spas is Fiuggi. Lazio are in the Park of Circeo National Park and part of the d 'Abruzzo. The cuisine of Lazio is of popular origin, among the dishesare the Bucatini alla carbonara e all'amatriciana. As for the wines being produced in Lazio over 24 DOC wines, including the Frascati Superiore DOC and the Est! Est! Est! Montefiascone D.O.C.
The Tuscia is also absorbed by the region called "Etruria" land of the Etruscans. In fact, in the area called "Maremma" there are necropolis (burial sites), especially in Tarquinia, Norcia, Cerveteri, Vulci and Castel d'Asso. Even in the inland area not far from the Bolsena lake it is possible to find the remains of vast necropolis like the one in the territory of the town of Grotte di Castro, and many settlements such as the archaic village in locality Acquarossa dating back to VIII - V century BC.
Of the Roman period we have the magnificent theatre of Ferento, long stretches of consular roads (Cassia and Aurelia) or spa facilities in the nearby of Viterbo (Bagnaccio) or Tarquinia.
Tuscia in addition to being the home of the Etruscans as also stated by the poet Vincenzo Cardarelli native of Tarquinia, is a treasure trove of art from the High Middle Ages and the eighteenth century. Viterbo for example is also called the "city of the popes", and in the splendid Palace of the Popes, from 1268 to 1271 took place the first conclave in history.
The city with its innumerable fountains, palaces and historic districts such as the medieval city of San Pellegrino is one of the most beautiful of all central Italy.
Of the Renaissance we have the notable Villa Lante (Bagnaia) built on original designs by Vignola, with its splendid Italian gardens and the Park of Monsters in Bomarzo, a typical garden dotted with giant sculptures representing imaginary monsters typical of the period.
Outside Viterbo it is possible to find the Farnese family imprint with some buildings scattered everywhere such as the beautiful Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola with its garden, builded in 500 by Vignola, who adapted a pentagonal fortress of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, which had already been very active in the building, for example by the particular church with an octagonal base of Montedoro in Montefiascone.
The Viterbo / Montefiascone area
The area around the lake of Bolsena is the perfect place to spend your holidays both in summer and winter.
Montefiascone among the towns of the Lake, is the only one who, from a height of 635 meters above sea level, offers a singular panoramic view across the territory of that portion of the province of Viterbo, which is called Alta Tuscia.
From the Tower of pilgrim at the fortress of the Popes it can be seen in its entirety, the territory of Southern Etruria formerly inhabited by the mysterious Etruscans.
To the north, over the Lake of Bolsena it will be hard not to notice the dark shape of Mount Amiata with its 1738 meters high, and the snow-capped peak during winter and destination for many skiers.
In looking to the west, on clear days, especially on sunny afternoons, you can see the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea on the coast of Maremman Tuscany and Lazio, while further south there is the plain leading to the medieval city of Viterbo with overlying Cimini Mountains.
The diversity of this region (plains, mountains and hills) made the Tuscia a very interesting province from the touristic point of view. Just few miles to move from the mountain climate characterized by the 1053 meters of the complex of the Cimini Mountains, where you can have beautiful walks through forests of oaks and chestnuts, to the sea of the seaside resorts of Tarquinia and Montalto, taking Montefiascone as a strategic point of reference for short trips and escursions.
The "Via Francigena" (the ancient route traveled by medieval pilgrims on their way to Rome), crosses the territory of the town of Montefiascone from north to south and the Romanesque Church of St. Flavian is an important reference point of the path.
In front of the church square, in a hypothetical crossroads, merged the pilgrims who came from the main path and those who came from nearby towns of Orvieto and Bagnoregio and that had decided to divert to Perugia, Todi and Assisi rather than to cross the province of Siena.
The route goes over different sections of the ancient Roman consular paved road "Cassia" and through olive groves and woods, with ups and downs and stunning views of the lake.
The shores of the lake can be reached via a road that descends from the slopes of the hill and through the fertile valley. The beaches of the lake are very popular between the swimmers during the summer but also the location for romantic walks in autumn and winter.
The lake is great for water sports like wind-surfing, boating or sailing, or the more relaxing fishing (along the beaches there are special places for Carp Fishing). Another very nice sport along the shores and in the many country roads that go up and down from the centre of the town to the valley, is the off-road cycling practiced with the use of mountain bikes.
The Town and particularly its old centre is perched on the highest hill of the volcanic Volsini Mountains that surround the basin of the lake. The shape of the inhabited area is typical one of the medieval town with a fortified wall and access doors that formerly were closed during the invasion. The fortress is located on the top and along with the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Margherita, make Montefiascone instantly recognizable from any point of Alta Tuscia you look at.

We spent a beautiful week in this gorgeous villa and appreciated its stunning views. It is common that pictures make everything nicer than in reality is, but you can be sure that not in this case. The pictures are nice, but reality is much nicer. You can just sit, watching the shiny lake and feel the piece of countryside with its deep history and see the happiness and friendliness of people. You can find there everything you need for a perfect holiday – relax at the lake, relax by the sea that is just about 45km, swimming pool and unbelievable history everywhere around you, stone cities you have never see, beautiful countryside, gardens, stunning food and vine… You can visit Rome or Siena or nearby cities Civita di Bagnoregio, Orvieto. Whenever you go, for sure you will find something worth to see . Janka |
