Holiday house in Bulgaria
House | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
This lovely newly-renovated two storey house is perched on the edge of traditional Merdanya village in central Bulgaria (near Veliko Turnovo). Upstairs, it has two double bedrooms with French doors opening onto a large balcony with wonderful views across the Stara Planina foothills - perfect for morning coffee or that evening glass of wine - a bathroom and a twin room. Downstairs has a spacious open plan layout between the living room, dining room and kitchen with all modern amenities, plus a bathroom. (It would be possible to sleep more than the official six with additional mattresses).
There is a large stone wall garden, cable TV, DVD player, washing machine, above ground pool, wifi, badminton net and 4 racquets, some kids' games and books, barbecue, fire pit and hammock. This is the place to go if you want to get away from it all and re-charge in pristine countryside in a part of Europe where life is still slow and deeply traditional.
In the heart of traditional rural Bulgaria, this is a true country idyll with herds of goats and friendly neighbours producing their own honey and wine. We have a local agent who looks after all our guests needs, also a friend in nearby Hotnitsa who runs local cultural tours, and a friendly taxi driver who will also double as a pizza delivery man. Merdanya is a small authentic Bulgarian village - expect to see wattle and daub houses, babushkas in head scarves, herds of goats and the odd horse-pulled cart. Nearly every villager grows their own food so the gardens are full of proudly tended corn, peppers and vines. There are two little grocery/general stores which are good for food basics including bread, cheese, salad, coffee, beer wine, local deli provisions, sweets etc. Other shops include an ironmonger, two café / bars,a pottery (where visits can be arranged) and a fish shop. Local supplies are just that – local – so whatever is in season is in the shops - and fantastically fresh and full of flavour. And the default method of food production is organic in small plots and gardens.
The historic city of Veliko Turnovo - which was the medieval capital of Bulgaria and an important cultural centre - is just 15 minutes drive away with its bars, cafés, restaurants, banks, shops etc. There are some stunning nature walks in the area, plus a beautiful monastery high on a hilltop nearby, a pool in the next village (Draghezivo) plus horse riding, birdwatching, archery and fishing all nearby. We can help organise all of these.

Do you need an escape from 24/7 city life? Yearning for a truly peaceful retreat somewhere far from the stresses and worries of the modern world? Somewhere where you can wake to the sound of goat bells and birdsong, instead of traffic and alarms? Where you can enjoy delicious local food with wine for around £20 for two? Maybe you want somewhere to you can retreat on your own to finish a project, to get some much needed down time close to nature, or perhaps to take the whole family on holiday.
This part of central Bulgaria is a beautiful and peaceful spot. Nestled in the foothills of the Stara Planina mountains, the countryside is stunning, with lakes, waterfalls and mountains, unspoilt villages and eco trails that consistently make it onto the Conde Nast Traveller Gold Lists.
Bulgaria is lush and green but also has over 300 days of brilliant sunshine a year, making it a wonderful spring and summer destination. The house is a fifteen minute drive from Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria. Today the town is a vibrant cultural centre in a dramatic setting built up on a horseshoe bend, topped by the castle on Tsaravets Hill, where there is a stunning sound and light show. There is also a beautiful hilltop monastery nearby. Nikopolis Ad Istrum are excellent Roman ruins north of VT, easy to reach from the house. Emen Canyon and Kapinovo are not too far and offer river swimming and restaurants. Arbanassi is an exquisitely restored village in the Revival Style, justly famous for is frescoes. It is located just a few kilometres outside VT.
Our house is set on the edge of Merdanya village, with wonderful views out across the foothills. Merdanya is a traditional and authentic working Bulgarian village. Expect some wattle and daub buildings and the odd pothole along with herds of goats and the occasional horse pulled cart. Nearly every villager grows their own food so the gardens are full of proudly tended corn, peppers and vines. On the town square there are two little grocery/general stores which are good for food basics. Other shops include an ironmonger, several cafe / bars and a fish shop. The fresh supplies are local, seasonal and delicious.
