Nostalgia of traditional smoke and steam pervades when the famous Ffestiniog Steam railway runs past the rear of the cottage. Glan yr Afon is a delightful 18th century miner's cottage which retains character and features from a bygone era, such as an impressive inglenook fireplace housing a multi fuel wood burning stove and original exposed beams in the lounge. The cottage overlooks a small mountain river, and open countryside scenery to the front with a backdrop of craggy hillside behind.
Glan yr Afon exudes a warm and friendly welcome and is presented to a good standard with special attention to detail to ensure a comfortable stay is had by all.
Standing amongst some dramatic scenery and enjoying views of countryside and hills encompassing the Manod mountains at the front with a craggy backdrop of the Moelwyn mountains which protect the village from much of the wind in the winter to the rear, the cottage is an ideal base to explore the area and attractions on offer. The village has a pleasant southerly aspect with relatively mild weather considering how high it is located in Snowdonia.
There are some fantastic walks, lakes and waterfalls that can be enjoyed from the cottage and the area is great for fishing and golfing. The Lakeside café is only a two minute walk from the cottage and the village pub is about a twenty minute walk away.
The slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog is just one and a half miles away and offers an array of eating establishments, pubs, shops, chemist, petrol station/garage and leisure centre/swimming pool. Blaenau Ffestiniog is also the home to the World Famous Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Steam railway which links to the harbour town of Porthmadog, and runs through the village of Tanygrisiau and the station in the village is only a 2 or 3 minute walk from the cottage.
Glan yr Afon really is the ideal base for exploring the many attractions Snowdonia has to offer. The Italianate village of Portmeirion is only eight miles away, Llechwedd Slate Caverns is one and a half miles and many CADW heritage sites and beaches are only a short twenty to thirty minute drive away. Coed y Brenin, one of the best mountain bike centres in Britain is also only twelve miles away and of course, there is Snowdon itself, which is about a thirty minute drive. The Stiniog downhill tracks & trails are only a short drive away, located at Llechwedd Slate Caverns alongside Zip World Titan and Bounce Below.
