About this location
The Ionian Islands region
The Ionian Islands are a small group of islands to the west of Greece. Kefallonios is the largest by land area, although the population is but a 1/3 of the next largest, Corfu. Each of the islands have different charateristics and identities.
Kefalonia is an island of contrasts from the rocky north with its historic Venetian port, Fiskardo, to the stunning sandy beaches near Skala in the South. The island retains its own identity and is less commercialised than its northern neighbour Corfu. Traditionally the summer home of the Roman elite, the ruins of a number of Roman villas are scattered throughout the island with Skala having its own. Temparatures in May and September are generally in the mid 20's C rising to high 20's or low 30's in July and August.
The mountainous interior of the island offers great scope for exploring by bike or on foot where if you put the effort in you will be rewarded with breathtaking views.
Made famous in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin you can stoll through the harbour of Sami and antisamos beach where much of the action was filmed.
