The Crete region

Crete is the largest Greek island being 250 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide and has a largely temperate climate. Rain is rarely seen between the months of May and October and long sunny days can be enjoyed with temperatures reaching 35C in July and August. If cooler weather is needed a 30 minute drive to the mountains provides magnificent scenery and a more temperate climate.

Crete is renowned for its sandy unspoilt beaches, warm Mediterranean waters, quaint villages and breathtaking scenery. It is an ideal holiday location.

The Cretan people are known for their generosity, friendliness, independent culture and pride in their cooking with locally produced fresh food.

Sissi

Pyrgos, Sissi is situated on the northeast coast of the island, near the larger resort of Malia, and 40km from Heraklion - the capital and airport destination. It is a small largely unspoilt fishing village with beach, shops and tavernas. The harbour is the focal point of the village and is used for fishing and tourist boats. By its nature, Sissi is suitable for a quiet, restful holiday in the sun.

There is easy access to the east/west E75 road which runs along the whole length of the island and is strategically placed for touring. A car is necessary in this small rural location and there are many places to visit around the village. All of the towns mentioned above are within an hours drive.

Malia is the larger resort situated 6km from Sissi with supermarkets, tavernas, bars and lively nightlife. It has many sandy beaches with safe swimming. It is the site of the Palace of Malia, an ancient town, and the remains can still be seen near Potamos Beach.

.

To the east is Agios Nikolaos a delightful, easy paced town with its Wednesday market, lake and port which hosts cruise liners. It has many cafes and tavernas around the lake where hot afternoons can be spent enjoying a cool beer or iced coffee. Sandy beaches are very welcoming. Nearby Elounda is a smaller town with its ferry boats to Spinalonga. This was made famous by the book The Island and was the last European leper colony to close in 1957. It is well worth a visit. Plaka is nearer Spinalonga and has a variety of interesting shops.

To the west 40 kilometres away is Heraklion, a bustling city. There are many squares surrounded by tavernas to provide welcome shade and refreshment. It has the major airport on the island, the ferry port and the fishing port. The old Venetian fortress is prominent in the bay and there are many interesting places to visit including the archaelogical and natural history museums plus its churches. There are a variety of stores in the city including Zara and Marks and Spencer and the market area is always an interesting place to visit to stock up on local commodities such as herbs, spices, honey, olive wood etc.

On the outskirts of the city is Knossos, the remains of a large minoan palace with its artifacts of buildings, pottery and frescoes. It is where Zeus is reputed to have entered the labyrinth and slew the minataur. A visit is well worth the effort especially on a cooler day.

The mountain and plateau of Lasithi to the north is a completely different experience withits cooler climate, large plateau with its crops, windmills and small traditional villages. This area is ideal for walking either on the plateau or in the mountains. To the west of the plateau is Dikteo Cave where, according to legend, the Greek god Zeus was hidden away from his father who wanted to kill him.

These are just a few of the experiences that await you in this beautiful island.
