The Crete region
Panormo is a friendly, typically Greek, seaside village on the north coast of Crete. It has a very warm and friendly atmosphere and is an ideal holiday base for people wanting to stay in Crete. Once you land in Heraklion, it is very straightforward to get to Panormo by using the New National Road, which runs almost the length of Crete, along the north coast. As Greek roads go, it's a very good one, but think more “A1” than motorway! Depending on how quickly you drive, it should take between 45 and 55 minutes from Heraklion Airport. In the village of Panormo itself, there are narrow streets to explore; it's the perfect place for those who want to escape a little and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Cretan life. There is a good selection of cafes, traditional tavernas, a butcher, a baker (hot, fresh bread every morning from 9am!) and shops where you can sample the local food and drink at very reasonable prices.
If you have children, Panormo is ideal. This is not only because they are given a warm welcome in the village, but because there are lovely sand and pebble beaches to play on. The sea is gently shelving, beaches are well protected and there are interesting rock pools to explore.
For older children, there are numerous options including swimming / snorkelling in the sea. Watersports such as pedalos, banana boats, jetskis are available at the main beach. There is a scuba diving centre at the Creta Marine Hotel, on the outskirts of the village. Additionally, there is a snack bar with pool tables on the harbour front and tennis courts on the outskirts of the village, if you're feeling particularly energetic.
Also Bali which was a small fishing village, but over the years has become a charming touring village, overlooking the little fishing harbour and the sea. It is a very attractive and romantic place, combining sea and mountains. Life is easy going enjoying the sun and the clear calm sea at a number of sandy and shingly beaches. Bali offers a large choice of taverns, restaurants, little shops, diving school, bars and discos.
Finally, should you feel like having a late night out or do some shopping, you can drive to the lively city of Rethymno, a 15min drive away.
The beautiful city of Rethymno is combining an old- time aristocratic appearance with a modern aspect, a blend which is creating a unique atmosphere. Various elements are participating to the charm of this attractive town such as the many arched doorways and stone staircases, 16th century buildings, Byzantine, Hellenic and Roman remains, narrow stone-paved streets, the small Venetian harbour and the superb huge municipal gardens, ideal for peacefulness and tranquillity. Every wonderful vestige from the past has survived in some neighbourhoods untouched by the passing of time and the growing of tourism. The modern part of Rethymno (built following the extension of the town) has been nicely blended with the Old Town, forming a magical picture. Rethymno has a highly developed cultural activity and actively participate in the cultural life of the entire island. The Faculty of Letters of the University of Crete is where much of the cultural activity is centred. Regular artistic events are organised by the faculty and the municipality such as art exhibitions, concerts and theatrical plays. The town offers all the touristy facilities needed and numerous accommodations of all categories as well as lively bars and clubs and various restaurants and excellent taverns.
Rethymno has regular bus services to the main towns and villages of the entire prefecture as well as to the towns of Chania and Heraklion.
