The Tuscany region
Tuscany is the heart of Italian art. Thousands of years of history and culture are witnessed by the most extraordinary monuments you can find in Italy: churches, museums, castles, palaces, ancient towns and villages. Volumes have been written about art in Tuscany and it is not possible to sum up here all the astoundig treasures you must absolutely see. But Tuscany is also renowned for its good climate and beautiful landscapes: green hills, blue sea, and sunshine. Why don't try also the thermal spa in Tuscany, which are famous all over the world? As for food, excellent olive oil and superb wines, as well as plenty of tempting traditional dishes with local produce.
Pisa area
Pisa is wellknown for its leaning tower and the amazing Piazza dei Miracoli, which don't need any further description. But there are many other monuments and places which are well worth seeing while walking through the city centre, after having a drink in a stylish café or tasting a real Italian homemade ice cream. Don't miss Piazza dei Cavalieri, the S. Matteo National Museum, S. Maria della Spina, S. Pierino, S. Caterina. Not far from Pisa visit Calci, a nice old town in the country with its beautiful Certosa, S. Miniato (a medieval town with landscapes on Arno valley and countryside), S. Piero a Grado (basilica). In June a festival is held in Pisa, called "Giugno Pisano" with music, traditonal games, exhibitions. On June 16th at night "Luminaria di S. Ranieri": thousands of candles adorn all the buildings along the river Arno and reflect their shapes on the water; unforgettable! If you love opera, in July and August the Puccini Festival is held in Torre del Lago (30 minutes driving); concerts and operas also in Pisa, Lucca, Volterra and in the countryside. There is good nigthlife on the coast, particularly in Summer: discos, pubs, live music, jazz concerts. There are many walks among the hills with beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages, view over the country up to the sea and the isles. There is a cycle lane along the river Arno. Tennis courts and swimming pools are only a few minutes driving distance. As for the sea, Tirrenia (Pisa beach) is 20 minutes by car. Are you fond of Italian food? There are lots of cosy restaurants in the city centre, in the country, and on the coast, where it is not easy to choose between the traditional or innovative offerings! As for drinks, you'll have no shortage of local options, with a wide range of high quality red and white wines. If you come in Autumn or Winter, don't miss the famous S. Miniato's white truffles. In November an important food festival is held there, which features plenty of delicious dishes with truffles. Don't miss the traditonal "sagre", small outdoor festivals which are held in many villages over the countryside, each offering food and wine inspired by a particular theme or ingredient, depending on the typical produce of the place. You can also find excellent chocolate from local producers. There is an antique market on the second Suturday and Sunday of each month in Pisa; on the third in Lucca; similar markets also in other towns and villages.
