The Sicily region
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Its territory is mostly hilly, apart from some higher mountains along the Northern coast (the Peloritani, Nebrodi and Madonie) and the highest and major active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna (3323 m). Sicily is surrounded by many smaller , extremly fascinating islands, such as Ustica, the Eolie (or Lipari) group, comprising two more active volcanoes, Stromboli and Vulcano, then the Egadi group, Pantelleria and Pelagie Isles. The geographical position of the island in the centre of the Mediterranean made it a crossword of cultures and peoples. The richness of sicilian history throughout the centuries has left many remarkable traces in the whole island , where archeological sites and artistical riches abound.
Greek culture left a significant trace on the island , still visible in its archeological sites and temples , many of them in the neighborhood of Menfi : the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento; the temple and the greek theatre in Segesta; the temples in Selinunte, and the caves of Cusa
Sicily is one of the few regions in the world with an extraordinary archaeological, artistic and naturalistic heritage.
Menfi is a peaceful town on the southern coast of Sicily in the province of Agrigento, between Sciacca and Selinunte, situated on a hill above the sea. Today Menfi produces mainly agricultural products, such as artichokes and olives and, above all, its good wine. Near Menfi there is Porto Palo, a small fishers' village with pleasant restaurants and pizza places. Menfi and Porto Palo are famous for their peaceful and safe beaches which can boast the Blue Flag award for their absolutely clean water.
