The Crete region
Crete – the southernmost island in Europe has “everything”! Its bountiful variety of features includes mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bar-boogie & nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and clean swimmable seas. Bathed in clear sunlight much of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island in Greece, it is understandably a most popular travel and vacation destination.
Crete also has a magic radiance – truly! There is the supreme quality of the light here, the sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants & flowers that are unique to the island. Breath in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the world’s olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses. Enjoy the delight of sipping a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village, the excitement and spillover of weddings and occasions, the history, the people and the world-sourced visitors. It is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise.
Crete has a people noted for and conspicuous in their hospitality and tradition of welcoming visitors. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local.
Because Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateaus that reward the discerning world traveller. Wondrous moments, those memorable combinations of time & place that provide you with enriching experiences, are yours - here - if you explore the island.
Makrigialos area
Makrigialos: A traditional Cretan village on the coast of the southeastern Crete. The village is built across the beach, and there are many wonderful and quiet beaches around it. The main beach is full of people in summer time and there are watersports, bars, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets & souvenir shops.
The nature around is beautiful with the southern Cretan Sea, the mountainsite, and the natural forest on the north. There are daily boat trips from Makrygialos to a small island called Koufonisi, that gives you the oportunity to escape in the real Cretan nature. You can also have the possibility to visit three traditional Cretan villages, and two archeological places in the village (the Minoan and the Greek Roman villa).
Beaches: There are five separate beaches in the immediate Makri Gialos area. The main beach, which is blue flag accredited and which stretches eastwards from the harbour for half a mile, provides golden sand and safe shallow bathing. There is on offer a range of water sports facilities in the summer season.
Nightlife: Makri Gialos is one of the quieter, less developed destinations in Crete, more suited to couples and families. The walk down from the hotel complex at the eastern end of town is dotted with bars, restaurants, tavernas, and the one nightclub in town, and most establishments also front onto the beach. Soon after passing the Gecko Bar you reach the harbour area, a pleasant place to stroll around, with its own patch of sandy beach and collection of waterfront bars, tavernas and restaurants standing side by side.
Culture: Makri Gialos itself is a small town of around 1000 inhabitants who originate mostly from the surrounding villages. It wasn't all that long ago that the town was just a scattering of store houses and fishermen's cottages, and even today the local economy is based as much, if not more, on agriculture as it is on tourism. The area has been inhabited for centuries and is home to Minoan and Roman ruins, the former dating as far back as 1400 B.C. More 'recent' evidence of habitation can be found at the Kapsa Monastery, perched on the hill side four miles east of town, and believed to have been founded in the 15th century. Contemporary culture is represented by timeless traditional Cretan villages, such as Pefki and Agios Stefanos, which dot the mountain sides.
Walking: With coastline to the south and mountains to the north, there are plenty of opportunities to explore. Coastal walks over sand, shingle and rock are possible east and west from Makri Gialos itself. About 11 miles from Makri Gialos, and at 4500 feet the highest peak in the area, Afendis Stavromenos affords stunning views of eastern Crete and can only be reached on foot or by 4x4. For the only slightly less adventurous, gorge walks can be found at Pefki and Pervolakia, both around four miles from Makri Gialos.
Scenic Drives: Every road out of town is a scenic drive, either along the coast or up into the mountains. Our site manager can give you detailed route schedules, including where to go, where to stop for the best views, and where to visit.

Had a lovely week at Grapevines, villa was perfect, managers Rosemary and Nico very friendly and always on hand to help when needed. Will recommend to friends and relatives and would love to return, but live so far away. Thank you all for a great time. Ray and Nancy Green, Christchurch, New Zealand June 2008
First and foremost we would like to thank you Rosemary and your husband for the wonderful hospitality you provided. The place was amazing but more importantly the kindness you exhibited to me and my family was above and beyond what we expected. For this we are eternally grateful. Thank you. Robbie and Jules, we would also like to extend our gratitude to you as well. The place was exceptional and your guidance and care throughout the entire process made it a stress free vacation. You garnered our trust from the very start and it was more than warranted. The process from beginning to end was the best we encountered throughout our 5 week stay in Europe. You set an exceptionally high bar. My family are thankful! We left wonderig if Crete was a wonderful place or was the service we acquired just that good! I do not believe there to be a higher compliment. Again, we would not hesitate in providing a reference for the exceptional care and quality Grapevines provides. I wish all of you the best. David Keith, Jean Kennedy and kids. Calgary, Alberta, Canada July2008
Just thought i'd drop you a line to say what a great time we had in Crete. We did a lot of sunbathing and swimming and generally relaxing and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Rosemary was very efficient and the place was very clean. Many thanks for all your help and advice - we hope to get back soon! Abi, Martin, Sally & Sadie, West Yorkshire p.s. the children wanted to stay! August 2008
I travelled to Crete on my own with 3 children, and it couldn't,t have been easier . I was met at the airport by the .taxi which was arranged by Rosemary Even though we didn't arrive at Grapevine Villas until midnight Rosemary was still there to meet us with a smile and show us around. The house was just perfect for us , everything we needed was there. The complex is clean modern and perfectly positioned and so so very friendly. We ate somewhere different every day and the best thing was it was all walkable and safe The children went off on their own to play tennis and football through the day at the hotel opposite , and i sat on the balcony of Grapevine with a drink and watched them ....perfect. We enjoyed our visit so much we have already booked for next year Kim, West Yorkshire August 2008 Dear Julie & Robbie We wanted to say a huge thank you, for allowing us to stay in your brilliant villa, it had the WOW factor, and it was a home from home for us. All the facilities were excellent, clean, comfortable and impressive. We also wanted to say how much we enjoyed meeting Rosemary and Nico, they are wonderful, and such an asset to Grapevines. We had a lovely holiday, and I wish we were there now! We have already recommended you to family and friends, so keep up the good work, and we will hopefully be in touch again in the future. Annie, David, Alana & Mollie.England August 2008
We've had an excellent holiday in your Villa thanks. we cant think of any way to improve anything and will definitely recommend to friends.and maybe come back; if we dont, its because we like visiting new places .We loved the little beach up the road, Pefki, the Snail Race and the Dragons cave.
