The Crete region
Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands and this provides visitors with interesting contrasts. There is a rich history and culture to be discovered with archaeological sites spread across the island, legend has it that Crete is the Birthplace of Zeus!
Visitors have plenty of opportunities to explore the island by car, walking, hiking, climbing and mountain biking (for the brave). Crete is known for its beautiful scenery, rugged mountains which rise to over 2000 meters above sea level, plateaux, gorges, beautiful sandy beaches and rocky coves.
The Cretan people are renowned for their hospitality and a warm welcome awaits all visitors, especially the young and the young at heart. Alfresco living is the order of the day and visitors requiring stress-free holidays will not be disappointed.
Crete is located in the Mediterranean, on the southern edge of Europe, south east Crete enjoys better than average weather, thanks to its North African influenced climate and the mountain ridge which runs across the island from the West to the East.
It is this geography means that the Makrigialos area has the best climate in all of Crete, and possibly the entire Mediterranean.
The Makrigialos / Bayview Resort area
Bayview is located just two minutes' walk from the Lagada beach, on the outskirts of Makrigialos, a picturesque fishing village which is one of the quieter, less developed destinations in Crete, more suited to couples and families. It is is peaceful, unhurried and surrounded by magnificent untouched countryside.
The scenery is spectacular with majestic mountains and beautiful bays, in fact the name Makrigialos means long beach and the beach here is just that, it is blue flag accredited and has golden sands and safe shallow bathing, suitable for children of all ages. There is on offer a range of water sports facilities in the summer season.
The harbour area is a pleasant place to stroll around, with its own patch of sandy beach. The waterfront stretches away from the harbour to the east and is dotted with bars, restaurants, cafés and tavernas, many of which open onto the beach. If you enjoy sampling authentic Cretan food, you’ll have a great time with locally produced fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, wine, and of course the best olive oil in the World.
For those of you who enjoy history, there is plenty to see including two archaeological sites within Makrigialos; an Minoan Villa and a Roman villa.
You can visit the island of Koufonisi on one of the many daily boat trips from Makrigialos. The boats leave from the harbour in the morning and returning in the afternoon. The island was once partly covered by a Roman factory producing scarlet dies for the robes of the emperors, from sea shells. So it's also an archaeological site of interest, it also has wonderful beaches, where you can enjoy a swim and a packed lunch.
Nearby dotting the mountain sides you will find several traditional Cretan villages, such as Pefki and Agios Stefanos. Pefki has its own Folk Museum, housed in the village Primary School. Here you can see everyday objects used by Cretans in the past, such as looms, grape presses, pithos jars, tools, spinning wheels, oil lamps, etc. The objects have been donated to the Folk Museum by inhabitants of Pefki. It’s worth spending some time in the village, wandering through the narrow streets and enjoying the peace, simplicity and picturesque atmosphere of the place.
There are three gorges to be found in the Makrigialos region, Pefki Gorge, Moni Kapsa Gorge and Butterfly Gorge. Pefki Gorge offers a walk along a pretty and picturesque route through the pine wood, Butterfly gorge starts high up on the road to Orino and ends at Koutsouras National Park and Moni Kapsa Gorge begins at the village of Kato Pervolakia finishes at the monastery of Moni Kapsa. All provide wonderful scenery.

| Airport: | Heraklion: 120 km |
Many British and most European airports fly direct to Heraklion, the most convenient airport to fly to.
There are a good range of budget, scheduled and chartered flights including: easyjet.com, jet2.com, olympic-airways.com, Monarch, British Airways, Thomson and Thomas Cook who all fly direct from the UK to Heraklion.
We find that travelsupermarket.com show a good range of flights from the above airlines.
Whilst the airport of Sitia is the closest airport, this has not been opened for international travel as yet.
As for car hire, we usually find the Just Rental Centre is very good value, they are at the airport and someone will meet you, it saves having to que for along time with everyone else to get your car - http://www.rental-centre-crete.com/index.html

I booked this apartment on-line as a result of a visit to the Home and Away site, although all but the first contact was directly with the owner who was most helpful and accommodating. Booking forms were uncomplicated and sent via email with specific instructions/conditions. Once confirmed and payment received full details of how to find Bayview together with other useful information were provided. A damage deposit was required which was returned within days of leaving the apartment. On arrival at Bayview the service could not have been friendlier. We were shown immediately to the apartment and everything we needed to know explained to us. The apartment was exactly as described; newly constructed with all the facilities expected of this kind of accommodation. The bedroom is spacious and is at the rear. There is a balcony off it (there are two balconies in this apartment), which we used to escape the afternoon sun. The lounge and kitchen is in the same room. It is fully equipped and contains a sofa and easy chair together with a TV set. An air conditioning unit is provided at no additional charge. Dining is on the front balcony, which boasts a large table capable of taking six persons. This balcony has stunning views of the beach and bay and overlooks the two swimming pools attached to the complex. There is also a large roof terrace. It has tables, chairs and sunbeds. The views are even better from here. Be warned, however, there is no shade on the roof and the sun is very strong! The apartment complex is private without being remote, but a car is essential unless you are prepared for a fairly lengthy walk into Makrigialos. The apartment is in fact closer to the village of Analipsi (a 20 minute walk) than Makrigialos. There are restaurant and shopping facilities in Analipsi, but it is not quite as pretty as Makrigialos. The whole area has a relaxing feel to it. Prices in the restaurants and bars are competitively pitched. For those looking for a relaxing, care free holiday with plenty of sunshine this is the place to be. I have booked again for 2013! |

The rental was nicer than we could have expected. The real perks were the 3 terraces from which we enjoyed the beautiful view. The rental was clean and quiet and the management was helpful. It's a perfect place for a couple- a little cramped with children but we managed and were fine. The pools were a real plus, too. We would recommend it and plan to stay there again. |

A very comfortable apartment for two persons with splendid view - good conditions for relaxing holiday. Convenient furniture inside and outside (except the double bed - 1,40 m is a bit small ...). We enjoyed sitting on the balcony or roof terrace with incredible sea view. End of May there were only very view people at Lagada Beach (bathing shoes recommended!) and also in the tavernas in Makrigialos. We recommend to visit "Gusto" - very good value for money and hospitable. |
