The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands and dramatically different from the rest. Once voted 10th in a world scenic beauty league, Kefalonia boasts some of the best beaches of the Greek islands. It's an island to be explored. First on the list must be the caves of Drogarati. The caves have stayed cool over the thousands of years it has taken to form the multi-coloured stalactites and stalagmites that fill the caverns. Nearby is the amazing subterranean lake of Melissani which can be explored by small rowing boat. Here the crystal water changes colour as sunlight streams through the cave's roof. If you are interested in beautiful churches, monasteries and castles, make sure to visit St. Andreas Monastery, St. Gerasimos Monastery, St. Bharbhara's Church, St. George's Castle and Assos Castle, just to mention a few.
Kefalonia is an island to be discovered by car or coach as there is an excellent road network. It is a great island for lovers of nature, walkers and ramblers, swimmers and snorkellers. Or you can just relax on one of the many beaches from small pebbly coves to silver and red sands and enjoy your immediate surroundings. Either way, Kefalonia is THE place to chill out. Because it is one of the least commercialised holiday destinations often revisited by discerning lovers of Greece with no lager-louts in sight - we think you'll love it!
The island is more mountainous than any other Ionian island with Mount Ainos in the south with its tallest peak - Megalos Soros - which reaches up to 1626 metres. Mount Ainos is covered by a very rare species of fir tree (Abies Cephalonensis).
The island has many wonderful bays and inlets to form its unusual shape and the rocky coastline has small and clean, pebble and sandy beaches.
Rare species such as loggerhead turtles and monk seals are just some of the marine life. The wild horses on mount ainos are not mythological and both the Robolla grape and the fir trees from mount Ainos are indigenous species. There is an array of wonderful flora as well as an abundance of birds all of which could live in harmony with each other - unless humans disturb them.
The weather on the island of Kefalonia consists of rainy winters and dry, hot summers. The climate is warm and dry from 18 C to 28 C in May and September, and from to 20 C to 36 C in June, July and August. Rain is a characteristic of the Ionian climate and the average annual rainfall can be up to three times higher than the Aegean Islands. This is why the Ionian Islands, including Kefalonia, have a dense and verdant vegetation, plenty of forests and fertile plains.
At the end of the Fanari coastal road and the beginning of the Lassi resort is the sandy cove of Kalamia named after the bamboo plants in the area. Access is by a rough track which starts from the Fanari road near the restaurant To Psito. There is a small taverna on the beach which also rents out sunbeds and beach umbrellas run by Panayiotis. To the left of the beach is a rocky outcrop and a cave which is excellent for snorkelling.
The Fanari road is the coastal road which runs from Lassi to Argostoli and is known as the romantic road which passes through a pine forest. Along this route are a few pebbly and sandy coves surrounded by rocks which you have to clamber down rocks to reach the beach. There is a small pebbly cove opposite the Galaxy Hotel which is easily accessible. This beach has no facilities but the hotel is nearby for drinks and snacks at their pool bar.
The Kefalonia / Lassi area
While visiting Kefalonia, a definite must is the local wineries. The Robolla winery in Omala, the Metaxa Winery close to Skala, the Gentilini Winery on the road to the airport, are open to the public and offer wonderful wine tasting.
There are also numerous museums on the island that offer, history, folklore and much much more for those who want to learn all about Kefalonia. While it's not a museum, one can also visit various places where local crafts are made.
Summertime is also a time when there are many religious festivals on the island. These festivals consist of live music, food and wine, and a taste of authentic Greek tradition. The most famous of these festivals is on August 15, and August 16 at St. Gerasimos. Another important festival is held the 14th of August at the Virgin Mary Church in Markopoulos. At this time, small snakes with crosses on their foreheads are present throughout the church and it is said, that these snakes only appear during this feast day.

We traveled to Kefalonia in September 2011, we found and booked this villa on the internet a few Months before we went, I booked direct through Rosa who owns the villas, the villas are ideal for couples and families, they are well equiped and made a good base for us, we also ate at Rosa's restaurant in aggostoli, the food is lovely and your made to feel very welcome. I can not find any negotives about the villa or the area apart from the steep climb to the villa, although I was with my parents who are in their 70's and they managed it fine, also there is a great chinese restaurant about 100 meters from the villa. The Maid/Cleaner at the villa's is very friendly and such a character. |
