The Lassithi Prefecture region

Lasithi is the eastern most prefecture on the island of Crete in Greece, bounded by the prefecture of Iraklio to the west and the Carpathian Sea on the east. Approximately 1,800 square kilometers in size, Lasithi is known for its contrasts: mountainous regions, long sandy beaches, a verdant plateau dotted with windmills and several small islets.

Although not as developed as the other parts of Crete, thanks to its beautiful beaches and year-round mild climate Lasithi does attract many tourists, and several areas - including Vai, Agios Nikolaos and the island of Chrisi - can get busy. To escape the crowds, seek out some of the more peaceful and traditional villages on the south coast, including Myrtos, Makrigialos, Xerokambos and Koutsouras, and be sure to include a trip to the island of Spinalonga which was formerly a Venetian fortress and a leper colony. Lasithi is also home to a number of interesting archeological sites. Minoan ruins include Vasiliki, Fournu Korfi, Pyrgos, Zakros and Gournia; Lato and Itanos were Dorian settlements.

Katsikia

Agios Nikolaos, or simply “Agios” to locals, sits on Mirabello Bay and is the capital of Lasithi. Including surrounding villages, its population is approximately 20,000. Agios Nikolaos was built on the site of the ancient town of Lato, which was at its peak during the 3rd century BC. Today the town includes a nice mix of traditional architecture with the requisite modern development.

The landmark site in Agios Nikolaos is Voulismeni (“Sunken”) Lake located behind the harbor in the center of town. Until 1867, when a man-made canal link to the sea was built, some referred to this lake as Vromolimni (“Stinky Lake”) because its stagnant waters emitted a horrible smell.

A charming promenade follows most of the perimeter of the lake; the rest of the shore is made up of distinctive vertical walls of red rock that are reminiscent of a volcanic crater (although it is not). There are remarkable panoramic views from the top of the hill behind the lake, although the walk up does require some effort.

There are quite a few legends regarding Voulismeni Lake. One story says that the Goddess Athena enjoyed bathing in the lake, and another (proven false) alleges that it is bottomless and connected by an underwater tunnel to Santorini. And yet a third legend claims that the German army dumped weapons and vehicles into the lake when they left after World War II.

The Folk Museum of Agios Nikolaos is small but contains many interesting items that provide a good illustration of everyday life in more recent historical Crete. In the museum you will see tools, furniture, costumes, traditional textiles and books. As well, religious icons displayed show proof of the piety of the Cretan people. Another interesting feature is a mock-up of a traditional Cretan bedroom, fully equipped and decorated.
