In idyllic historic, rural setting next to millpond, river & waterfall, this barn-cottage conversion is light, airy and spacious. Furnished mainly with antiques and original oil paintings, it is stylish, but with Yorkshire character. The kitchen, with its large antique mulberry wood table is often used a second living room.

This is a particularly eco-friendly cottage with a solar panel, heat pump, hydro-electric power, wood burner, under-floor heating and massive insulation. It is also an excellent base for discovering the glories of uncrowded Summer Wine Country, the dramatic northern Peak District, Chatsworth, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Bronte Country and Haworth and the lesser known Bronte connections of West Yorkshire's charming country houses.

A short, steep and rough walk along an ancient packhorse route through woodland brings you to the 'Rose and Crown' pub, just over the brow of the hill. You'll need hiking boots. If pampering is on the agenda, if you can tear yourselves away from the prize winning shared garden with its swings and sculptural pods, Titanic Spa is very nearby.

Northern England region

Tyas Cottage is one of 3 properties that form a hamlet in Merrydale, a secluded and remote valley, site of the first water powered mill in the larger Colne Valley.

An ancient packhorse route through relict woodland connects Tyas Cottage to 'The Rose and Crown'

Both Slaithwaite and Marsden, its nearest villages are characterful and charming. The canal has been reopened through 'Slawit' and the artisan bread bakery next to it should not be missed. Slaithwaite has a biennial Moonrakers Festival and Marsden has Cuckoo Day and the Imbolc Fire Festival.

The rugged West Riding of Yorkshire is quite unlike anywhere else. Seat of the industrial revolution and although relatively densely populated, its steep valleys and wide open moorland can give one the impression of being isolated.

Marsden boasts the longest, highest canal tunnel in Britain. There are trips into and at the visitor centre you can learn how to "leg" it all the way to Lancashire.

Less than 3 miles away, Titanic Spa offers the latest in pampering

There are myriad attractions within a relatively short distance - even cities such as Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Halifax are all less than 25 miles away.

For the artistically inclined, Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an absolute MUST!
