The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

Aquitaine is an historic area of South West France, thanks to the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henri II in 1152, thus making this beautiful area part of England for the next 300 years. There are many reminders of these times within the walls of the many Bastide towns dotted around the Lot et Garonne - a timeless corner of Aquitaine, once described as "Like a unspoilt Tuscany or Provence".These Bastides are wonderful places to wander amongst the narrow street and alleys and perhaps sample the local cuisine.
The climate is sunny, warm and bright for most of the year and the summer enjoys hot days and balmy nights.
There are many vineyards to visit and sample or buy some of the best wines of France ~ famously, Duras, Buzet, Bergerac and Bordeaux. All are within a delightful drive of our cottage.
During July and August, not to be missed are the night markets held in many of the nearby villages. Here one can buy local produce such as duck, chicken ,meat and fish cooked to order along with fruits, desserts, bread and of course local wines. Sit beneath the trees and enjoy a memorable evening under the stars listening to live music.
Fruit and vegetable street markets abound and one can sample real french culture and way of life.
There are many beautiful areas for walking and discovering pretty villages and countryside, including fields of golden sunflowers and orchards of plums, hazelnuts and apples.
We are blessed with 2 lovely rivers, the Lot and the Garonne and also the peaceful Canal Lateral, ideal for cycling or strolling. There is a lake with man-made beach and picnic area at nearby Lougratte.
Further afield but within easy reach are the beautiful cities of Bordeaux and Toulouse and the majestic citadel of Carcassonne. For those who enjoy the sea, Arcachon and its golden beaches are within 90 minutes if our cottage.
30 minutes north is the beautiful area of the Dordogne- well worth a visit.
The Coulx area
Tombeboeuf is 4 Km from Coulx and has a boulangerie, general store, butchers, post office, hairdressers, pharmacy, doctor and very good hotel with restaurant and bar.
Our local golf course and bar is even closer and is owned by a friendly English couple who will offer you a warm welcome.
10 Km south of Coulx is the delightful village of Castelmoron which is situated on the banks of the River Lot and, as well as all the usual amenities, has a weekly market all year, and in summer has a beach for swimming and also boats for hire to explore this beautiful river.
Our nearest large town is Tonneins, 15Km away, which sits above our other large river, The Garonne. Here there is a large and very interesting weekly market. and a variety of restaurants. There is also a hypermarket supplying all you could need.
Within a short drive are the Bastide towns of Pujols, Monflanquin, Castillones and many more beautiful medieval villages.
Just south of the River Lot is a local airfield where one can go up in a light aircraft or microlight to get amazing views or even learn to fly. There is also a restaurant and bar.
Other local activities are horseriding, fishing and tennis.

We had the most amazing, relaxing, gastronomic, sun filled honeymoon at St Valentin Cottage. The gite is attached to the owner's house but is wonderfully private with its own garden facing the windmill of Coulx and we witnessed daily golden sunsets whilst sipping a chilled bottle of local wine each evening. We arrived in France thinking we would put in a lot of driving and explore the Lot and Dordogne but ended up staying by the pool and relaxing more often than not! After a hard day by the pool, we explored the local night markets which were a food lover's delight. They are a set up where local food producers present their produce around long tables where you can pick and mix between duck, foie gras, snails, mussels, oysters, steak, tomatoes, breads (the list is endless!). This is all washed down with local wine and we pulled out GCSE French vocab from our memories to converse with friendly local people. Tony and Jane are the owners of the gite and live in a house next door. They were very friendly and struck exactly the right balance of being helpful and informative yet leaving us to enjoy our holiday in the cottage. The lovely pool is shared with them and they tended to use it in the early evening and so due to our laziness, we spent most of the day alone on the sun loungers. The local area is beautiful and there is a boulangerie in Tombeboeuf (5 minutes away) for fresh croissants and bread each day. We would thoroughly recommend St Valentin Cottage for a relaxing holiday and we are already planning to go back! |

if you are a couple looking for peace and quiet in a wonderful location, then look no further. the cottage is extremely comfortable, clean, with everything you need to make it a home from home. it is in a wonderful spot with superb views and sunsets to die for.the owners live next door and are extremely friendly ,but not intrusive and are full of valuable information for those who want to move further than the pool. after more than 20 years of self catering holidays in France...this is definately one for re-visiting, again and again. |

*" If Carlsberg did gites this would be it. The combination of high-class accommodation in a glorious setting with helpful and friendly owners ensures that we will return! The spectacular scenery and empty roads have made for a great week of touring. Don't miss the night markets at Laparade & Fongrave. Many thanks to Tony & Jane. Au Revoir" Clive & Linda
